Clapped out van parked up on our street

We have a clapped out van parked up on our street. It's been though the wars, is rusty and sitting with fully deflated tyres on its rims. It's locked and parked "legally" (technically the wrong way round, but no one cares or knows this any longer).

It's been there for four months. it does not belong to anyone around here. We called the police, who ran a check and said it wasn't stolen. The also said they'd tried to call / fax the owner, who lived elsewhere.

Its tax was due to run out end Jan., but I notice it's now got a brand new six months on it to July 2010.

Any ideas who would park up a long way from where they live? Who would leave a van in another area unused for this long? Why? Can we do anything?

BTW - dozens of Job Centre brown envelopes in the footwell.
Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.

So it's got new tax and therefore insurance.

The owner can park it on any road he likes, so what really does it have to do with you?

As it's legally there you can legally do nowt about it.

I do sympathise with OP. I would hate to have a clapped out van parked outside my house. Nothing you can do unfortunately.

If you can read an address on any of those brown envelopes, it might be the owner. You might want to ask politely or bribe them to park it elsewhere.

You can check whether it's insured at www.askmid.com. However, I guess it is, if the police aren't interested.

It would annoy me also. Sounds like it probably annoys the owner, which is why it's not parked outside his house.

Well, legally he can't cause he don't own it.

I belive the council can still remove abandoned vehicles even if they are taxed and insured and MOT'ed if they are in a delapidated condition (such as deflated tyres, broken windows etc).

You get a 7 days notice stuck to your windscreen. If you don't respond, they can then tow it.
