*GRUMBLE ALERT*
Well went for my smear call back tonight. What a palaver (sp!)
It wasn't the usual nurse I see and this one didn't exactly fill me with confidence.
Firstly, I was due for my pill to be renewed and she suggested I should be looking at more long term methods of contraception such as the implant or coil. (As far as I am aware, you can't have the coil fitted if you have had an abnormal smear!) yes you can both my sisters who have had treatment for dodgy cells have/had coils I explained that I was happy with the mini pill that I was on and unless there was a reason to come off it (relating to the previous abnormal smear) then I didn't see the reasoning in changing to another method that may not suit me as well.
Then she said she wasn't sure whether she sould do the smear as it had only been 5 months since the last one and not 6 and the lab may send it back and refuse to process it. I explained that the surgery had sent me a letter telling me to make the appointment and so I was just following their advice.
Bearing in mind I had had to dig out the pop socks, slip on shoes, floaty skirt, trim the lady garden (TMI) and mentally prepare myself for the test, the last thing I wanted to do was go back again in another month If I didn't have to.
She eventually decided to do the smear after all. (felt like being scraped with a razor blade, to me the new plastic speculum seems more painful then the old method).
Sorry for being a moaning mini, but I was hoping to come away from the consulation reassured or at least better informed after worrying myself silly after the abnormal result last time. Hey ho, I know some of you ladies have much worse things to contend with, so apologies for grumbling, but just needed to vent:)

Prettypennies:- The coil okay yes its brill if it works for you. 10 women i know thought it was fantastic never had a single problem.
I went i got mine inserted was in so much pain it was unreal. So if you do decide to get a coil fitted make it done by a professional and not a trainee like i did.
I hate smears and come out an appointment bleeding, the nurse always freaks while i'm they soothing saying it all right im just a bleeder. well done for going :T
Not any help sorry0 -
Thanks for sharing kezlou. It is always helpful to hear other people's experiences. The subject of smears came up in the staffroom and I found out that one of my co-workers has had abnormal smears for years and been for a colposcopy exam. It made me fell better to know that it is relatively common for women to be recalled. I know they give you leaflets to that effect but it is always more reassuring when you hear from people you knowTwins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0

They tell you to come in for the smear then start pratting you about... jeez it's undignified enough as it is...last time I had one practice nurse had a student in so gawd only know what she did to me (so they could both peer in IYSWIM) but I had to sit tilted for about 2 days afterwards...I could NOT sit on my 'front' IYSWIM...
(oh and you spelled palaver correctly - go to the topof the class!)Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016
Thank you Honey Bear0 -
I get recalled every time i have a smear, because i have abnormal cells which are completely normal for me.
Best thing to do is keep going to your appointments no matter how horrid they are. Better to be safe than sorry.
I think smears in general are just one of things women feel very uncomfortable about. A very close friend of mine bounds into hers flicks her undies off and is done two mins, she isn't bothered by them in the slightest.0 -
Valli - (*polishes spelling halo*) poor you. I know they have to learn, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the comfort or dignity of the patients.
Kezlou - I had always taken smear tests in my stride in the past. My prudishness was kicked into touch after a complicated twin labour several years ago (must have been a dozen people in the room having a butchers at one point!!).
But after having one smear come back abnormal, I was a bit more anxious this time round. It helps to hear that abnormal is actually fairly normal IYSWIM and it is just important to keep an eye on thingsTwins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0
