Sorry - it's the frustrated motorists who are demonstrating impatience and reduced driving capability.

The idea behind the reduced speed limit is to improve safety, is it not? How is it safer to have more incidences of dangerous overtaking?

Nobody is forced to overtake dangerously, some morons choose to do so.

Trouble with a 50 limit being introduced is that it's about 5mph too slow to be able to use the 6th gear many young cars have now so for that area you'll be using about 10% more fuel.
If your genuinly gaining a safety advantage then fine no problem.

Why is everyone in such a hurry?, you need to chill out, you will get there eventually, maybe a minute later, does it really matter.
Driving at 60mph on a national limit A road is not being in a hurry.

Would you make your computer take 1 minute longer to boot up because someone else has a virus because they don't use a firewall?

Would you choose to wait for an extra minute in the checkout because it's been decided that there should be a 1 minute gap between customers because someone once dropped a jar on their foot?

There will be a reduction in the accident rate and a reduction in the severity of some of those that do occur. It won't stop them altogether.

And impatience is not a quality that helps driving in modern conditions (never was actually);)
Why will there be a reduction in the accident rate?

"and new reflective signs will be erected to improve driving conditions at night."

I'd have thought this, possibly with a street light as suggested earlier, would do the trick to make it safer without lowering the speed limit. But they probably know it is cheaper to reduce the speed limit than to install a street light.

Dropping the speed limit won't dissuade those morons from doing what they do.

So you deal with them by using traffic patrols, because speed cameras won't detect dangerous overtakes. Except now you have traffic patrols, you don't need to reduce the speed limit.

But we both know that neither will happen. People will continue to die, just so long as the council "has done something" they'll be happy.

When you are driving there feels to be a big difference between 50 and 60 so maybe it will make some difference?

I have noticed that a lot of roads don't seem to have the correct speed limit - particularly in London.

A lot of roads which are 30 should be 20 (it doesn't feel safe or right to do 30 down them)

And a lot of roads which are 20 should be 30 (it feels wrong to be doing 20 when you could easily and safely do 30).

How they have worked some of those out is bizarre.

When I did my driving test I unfortunately got the route that was mostly 20mph. I would say keeping to 20mph for almost half an hour was the hardest part of the test.

Sometimes this is a result of being in the wrong gear. Driving in second gear with a bit of throttle is much easier than trying to bumble along in third on tickover.

I understand what you are saying, but i think it really was just doing 20mph on an open road and feeling like you arent making much progress.

A lot of cramped residential streets (sometimes one-way) with lots of parked cars are 30mph, yet clear open roads are often 20mph.
