the long, sweeping motorway (2 lanes) bend where the M55 joins the M6 is restricted to 50 mph. why? i guess because that's what they who decide have decided is a safe speed for that piece of road. it can't be enforced on those who chose to exceed it. to achieve that speed cameras have to be employed. then people take notice. funny, that, isn't it?
Isn't the limit there just one of those 'MAX SPEED 50' advisory signs that isn't actually a legal limit?

Both perfectly fine at NSL providing the driver is looking where they are going and slowing if they think that corner is too sharp for them to take at 60..

Yes PROVIDING. Probably 50% of drivers - maybe more - really don't take that much notice of road conditions. They need to be told - and even then it doesn't always sink in.
My prediction is that it will make no difference whatsoever. Apart from raising my blood pressure every time I see it..

It will make SOME difference. There will be a reduction in the accident rate and a reduction in the severity of some of those that do occur. It won't stop them altogether.

And impatience is not a quality that helps driving in modern conditions (never was actually);)

!!!!!!!!. There could very well be an increase in accidents caused by frustrated motorists overtaking vehicles now driving too slowly for the road's natural speed limit.

Both accidents were in the dark and wet. Does that suggest something?
    .

    Install street lighting.

Oh! hang on, that would cost money with no return in revenue.... scrap that idea!

Sorry - it's the frustrated motorists who are demonstrating impatience and reduced driving capability.

This is a considerable problem around here. The A338 from Fordingbridge to Ringwood is a 60 limit (bar one half mile stretch). The entire length is easily negotiable at 60 mph but it is twisty so overtaking opportunities are rare. Drivers regularly drive along it at 30mph (usually 'flat hat man' or his wife). Time and again this leads to people overtaking where it is not safe.
  • Motorists aren't the only people on the road. 50mph is not exactly slow either?

Then they are at fault, not the road, not the speed limit, not the slow driver.

I often get stuck behind tractors doing about 20 mph, but that doesn't mean I will overtake them when it is not safe to do so.

I didn't say that they weren't at fault. I am not condoning dangerous overtaking.

But driving at well below the speed limit for the road is poor driving and you can (and someone I know has) fail your driving test for it (he did 40 in a 60 limit).

Tractors are a rather different matter as it is clear why they are going slowly and one knows that they are usually only going short distances.

We all live in the UK, we all know that the roads ( as well as almost everything else ) is dated and lacks proper investment, we just need to be more tolerant and less impatient.

It is strange how folk coped during the recent bad weather, nobody was driving around at the limits or over, but life carried on.:D

Chill pills are the order of the day... ;)
