Justificatio for a 60 to 50 drop is 2 accidents. Both in the dark and wet.
In one a car overtook and hit a motorbike coming the other way.
In the other a car went into a tree, no other vehicles involved.

What's a 50 limit going to change about that?

    You're misrepresenting whats been said

"The A46 in Old Sodbury will become a 50mph zone following two fatal crashes in 2008 and a string of other serious accidents.

South Gloucestershire Council said the move was in response to the number of accidents on the section of road from the Cross Hands junction southbound towards Junction 18 of the M4.

A statement said: "The A46 south of the Cross Hands has been identified as a short length of road suffering from a cluster of road traffic accidents including two fatalities."

It sounds like a particularly dodgey section of road and they've already tried other measures?

This is exactly the expensive and pointless tinkering that satisfies people that "something is being done".

Both accidents were in the dark and wet. Does that suggest something?

I know the 2 corners involved and they are on a wide A road.
Both perfectly fine at NSL providing the driver is looking where they are going and slowing if they think that corner is too sharp for them to take at 60.

My prediction is that it will make no difference whatsoever. Apart from raising my blood pressure every time I see it.

Its going to make people drive slower thus giving them more thinking and braking time, and that will reduce accidents.:)

i think you really meant, satisfys the road safety warriors and gives the council a better chance at making so money on speeding fines from the drivers who remember the road as a 60.

Quite agree, what do you think they should do, or is it just something that can't be improved?

Well, I suppose part of the problem is that central government keep giving councils road safety targets. There's only so much that they can change, and, sadly, that often means implementing schemes that appear to be doing something, even if they will achieve very little. The annoying thing is that we're all paying for the meddling that's been going on.

These corners haven't moved in the last 15 years that I've been using them. If you know the road, you know that they're there. If you don't then take care and assume that they might be sharp.

They're not even that sharp. Visibility is good.

My guess is that the incident involving the overtaking would still happen. Some dawdler doing 40 and someone else behind sees an opportunity to overtake. Cars hitting trees is quite common in the early hours and often involves a lack of judgement and ignoring existing limits.

  • Or the council could just put up a street light marking the apex of the corner so people can actually see it

There is a similar situation in the area i came from. A stretch of the A22 runs through East Grinstead and has recently been brought down to 30mph after being 40mph for longer than i've been alive, and according to the parent of a friend who is on the local town council, those flashing signs that warn that you are driving to fast are all set at 28mph.

The reason for the drop in the limit was that either the mayor or a relative of the mayor (can't remember the whole story tbh) was involved in a head on with somebody else who was overtaking on a blind bend.

In my opinion people need to realise that its not speed itself that causes accidents - its bad judgement of drivers. Whoever overtook on that corner would most likely overtake on any corner regardless of the speed limit.

The only other argument i'm aware of for the change in limit is that the road runs past a school, however I went to that school and very well remember that staff were posted to hand out detention slips to anybody that did not use the underpass to cross the road. Apparently that underpass that, again, has been in use for longer than i've been alive, is no longer safe due to the people that hang around in there. As i remember it, 1500+ kids would pass through there at around 3pm on a daily basis - all of them survived.

Its probably just somebody looking to further there own agenda by saying things in meetings.

yip,its slowing down the law abidding drivers but doing nothing proactive in the sense of actually stopping bad driving. like better driving courses.

treat the cause not the symptoms.

Why is everyone in such a hurry?, you need to chill out, you will get there eventually, maybe a minute later, does it really matter.

its not about speed its about safety.
if some muppet crashes going round a bend at 60, then theres a good chance they would still do the same at 50.

i enjoy driving fast aswell, its fun,but its just becoming harder and harder to enjoy little pleasures in this life because someone with less skill or experince can't do it nobody can do it.
cars are safer than ever but we are getting lower speed limits.
