Each ISP seems to differ, but Virgin appear to shape based on direct downloading. So depending on the time of day theyll cut the service down whenever a certain limit has been reached straight away, not the next day or whatever

I find when they do this it helps to turn of power to the cable router and restart it. Seems to sort it for a while. They stuffed up my download of the new ultimate edition linux 3 times. Waiting for a snotty e-mail from them about downloading so I can point out they advertise themselves as linux friendly - thick as mince generaly.

We've been having intermittent problems with our Broadband connection for a good month or two and up until recently I've been focusing on our PC for the problem, removing unwanted files, checking for viruses, spyware, malware etc etc but still it struggles along and disconnects. I even downloaded the latest Explorer 8 in an effort to solve the problem.
So earlier this evening I tested the Broadband speed and discovered it was approx 1.5mb (download) and 0.5mbs (Upload) which rings alarm bells as I believe we should be getting around 10mb (At least that's what we pay for) so I'm now looking at Virgin and having checked their website (After some delay) I note their are a number of complaints relating to problems with their broadband service.
The question is, how easy will it be to get help/assistance from them? from the feedback on their own forums I'm not confident, so wish me luck!

What router or modem are you using? USB or ethernet connection?

    Hi macman,
I,m using an ethernet connection which I believe is the better of the two.

I've just contctd VM (on 151) and got thru to their dreaded India call centre (Had just switched on our PC only to find the connection not working so had to reboot the modem).
I went thru the problem with them (thinking this will be a waste of time and effort) but was pleasantly surprised to find the operator was quite helpful and not at all dismissive.
After confirming that current connection was OK (I had just tested it at 9.86mbs after rebooting) she noted that our modem was quite old so immediately arranged to send a replacement which should arrive in 2 or 3 days. l must admit it had crossed my mind that maybe the modem was the problem (even though we normally have to reboot the pc) so I'm hopeful this will do the trick once it's in place.
The lady also suggested trying a different browser i.e. Firefox. I will, if the problem persists but I hv been reluctant to change mainly because of all my favourites are listed on I.Explorer.

Incidently, having previously upgraded to Explorer 8 we now find that when we scroll up or down the screen keeps on moving which is very annoying. We've had this problem before but can't recall how to change the setting (if there is one :() - can someone advise?

You can import your favourites into firefox at set up, you can even synchronise them with Xmarks extension for both.

    Hi John

You will need to enter your phone number and then when it asks for confirmation enter your broadband user name which you should find in your details in your router.

This will give you the IP profile that BT has set on your line and dictates at what download speed your broadband is set at.
If you have had problems with your router and have been turning it off & on quite a few times during the day then your IP profile at your exchange will have been set at a low rate.

This is the link for the test, if you can come back and tell us what the details are in the test then it will give us a better idea what is happening.................

I've got to go out now so will hv to check this later. Thx for your help though.
