I popped by to request a recipe in your collection, Weezl, for using Glenryk pilchards in tomato sauce on the basis [STRIKE]I have a stash[/STRIKE] they are cheap (65p for 425g) and healthy. :j Have just scoffed pasta with a tin of tomatoes and bottom-of-the-fridge veg, four portions for around £1.50 but I am sure you can better that ...

Your month of recipes look delicious, and don't scream frugal at all. :) Off to catch up with the rest of the thread!

    thanks :)

I do my fair share of just sitting and fiddling though!

Haribo:), your costings would be welcomed, which shop do you have locally?

Lesley would you fancy trying to frugalise the beetroot tart?

I think it would be good in Keith and Hetty Barnacle's meal planner :D

Sure, I'll have a go at frugalising it, presumably I need to use the ingredients on the shopping list for this month?

If you can, but for hetty and Keith we will have a little more money to play with if you need to add an extra ingredient, as they're the ones who are willing to go veggie :)

My version of corned beef hash goes like this: boil and mash potaoes, stir in corned beef, chopped onion and boiled carrot chunks. Bake til crispy.
Allegra yours sounds very frugal:T:T:T, could you guestimate amounts needed for a family of 4?

and Lesley - even if it doesnae go in our Weezls Grand Plan - 'twould be good if you could give us those 2 recipes you mentioned that you made up purlease:) - ie the roasted veg. tart and spinach dumplings:):)

The Spinach Dumplings are a Good Food one that is here, but I use a tomato sauce made with a tin of toms, onion sauted in olive oil and some basil, fresh if you have it, dried if you haven't, half a tsp sugar and s+p. Whizzed smooth is my preference, but not obligatory

Weezl , hope you are looking after yourself,

Would it help if someone did the monthly shop and then followed the months worth of meals, giving you a feedback on if it filled them up/got bored and if it generally fit in with life?

I need to check with OH but im pretty sure we would be up for doing this next month with tweeks by you and the others as the month went on, if needed.

Obviously there is only two of us so no sure if that may skew the result but I'm happy to give it a go ( more interesting them art research lol) however if you want to do individual recipe tests for the moment, I wont be put out!! Feel free to say no!

    Let me know

Weezl.... if you want to use purple stuff - then have you thought of red flannel hash?

Basically corned beef hash and beetroot.... I've tried this good food recipe and it's much nicer than the beetroot soups I've made ;)

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3727/red-flannel-hash

But it might need something to give it a bit of a kick with no horseradish in the cupboard ;)

Though on it's own as a recipe I would argue against it really feeding 4 people for a main meal - not on its own :o

    Corned Beef Hash
5lb bag of potatoes cut into large chunks
1 large tin of corned beef
    1 large onion diced
2 carrots chopped into small chunks

Throw all the veg in a pan and boil in salted water until soft, then throw in the corned beef chopped up into chunks. Stir well and then add some gravy granules etc, salt and pepper and a squirt of brown sauce.

    Voila!

I serve with steamed cabbage, beetroot (shrink wrapped type) and crusty bread. Home made preferably.

Should serve at least four with healthy appetites.

artybear, :) what a lovely, generous and very tempting suggestion. I really want to say 'yes go for it.'

My slight concern is about the imminence (sp?) of me having a baby at the end of March, but likely to be a little early according to the midwives.

I'd so hate for you to have bought all this food and then me disappear and leave you with a fridge full of stuff you weren't sure how to combine or use! I'd feel really bad for letting you down :o:).

How about we see how far we get with meal plans + recipes etc over the next couple of weeks and then if you feel you have enough info to go for it, then yay! :j:j. But you won't have to be relying on someone who's got her hands a bit full!

    How does that sound?

I don't want to be mean-spirited about such a generous offer, I just wouldn't want to promise and then let you down.

    Weezl-goodness dont worry about it

I will test as many recipes as possible, probably most of them. I think I keep forgetting you're having the momentous event happening very soon and dont want to add to the burden at all!

However saying that when you feel the PLAN is ready for testing and so are you feel free to remind me of my offer.

BTW i love both Fergus and Kester-such cool namesXXXX
