serves 4?
Looks good
Might have to include an eggless one depending how much the cakes use up and whether the puddings are a bit unvaried by general consensus. But I really like the sound of it, thanks. Hello and welcome BTW I don't think I've said that!
Hello too to HOWMUCH
I do my shopping in 5 different supermarkets (Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Co-op and Farmfoods) plus my local butcher and fishmonger. My nearest Asda and Sainsburys are 100 miles away and my nearest Morrisons is 50 miles away. I check all the special offers first then buy accordingly. Doing this recipe from Tesco for ease would cost as follows.
Tesco Value spuds one third of a bag 33p
Tesco own brand corned beef £1.34
Tesco own brand stock cube 7p Asda
Tesco own brand baked beans (not value) 44p
Total £2.18 (though it actually costs me less as this isn't allowing for special offers (I buy Heinz beans as 3 for £1 in Farmfoods), I buy Lidl corned beef but can't remember how much it costs :oand have just stocked up on Aldi spuds at 69p a kilo.) Larger appetites may require half a bag of spuds but it's really filling, especially if you add the eggs.
Forgot to say it is helped greatly by a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

I don't know whether it is of interest to anyone, but there is a document about portion sizes for the catering industry on Ealing's council website at http://www.ealing.gov.uk/services/community/health/food_matters/food_businesses/ You need to scroll down to the link called "Food portion size guidelines for caterers (word)", or you can go straight to the document download page at:
http://www.ealing.gov.uk/ealing3/export/sites/ealingweb/services/community/health/food_matters/food_businesses/docs/portionsizesdocumentfinal.doc
I can't remember how I first came across this document (having nothing to do with the food industry or Ealing), but it makes for interesting reading -- although, needless to say, peanut butter isn't mentioned!
Thats fantastic for me :j I've often wondered whether there was some sort of break down of individual items and what portion size they should be for both me and DD. I think I may be printing that out Thank you so so so much for that:T:T

Wowsers, the onion tart was amazing! It got a big thumbs up from both me and OH, which is a big rarity as our food tastes differ quite a bit.
I didn't bother with cheese in the pastry but transferred the extra to the tart topping. Nom, nom, nom!
Some thoughts on adaptations? Well as has already been said I think it would be good with some of the onion subbed for some potato. I also think it could be good with mushroom (although OH would disagree) or some frozen spinach to add in and extra veg portion.
Next test for us will be the sweetcorn fritters and carrot cake.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0 -

It was the delia original- the white flour was SP but I also had some wholemeal hanging around so used that too!
DH isn't veggie, although he is at home since I am the cook and I don't cook really cook meat!:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0 -
Here you go Ceridwen. It's been quite a while since I cooked this, but from my notes, I think this is about right. OH and I were veggie for about 15 years or so, so I have lots of veggie recipes that I still use, and we both still like to eat veggie about half the time even tho we are now lapsed
Gram Flour and Spicy Veg Tart
Ingredients
For the pastry:
100g gram flour
pinch of salt
50g butter or spread
1 onion
100g button mushrooms
1 med courgette
2 med eggs
2 tsps Tandoori masala mix
25g Fontina cheese, or similar
Approx 2 tblsp thick yogort
Mix the gram flour, baking powder and salt. Rub the fat into the flour mix. Add tiny bits of water at a time until you have a mix that will bind together. This pastry is almost impossible to roll out, although you might be able to do it between sheets of greased greaseproof paper or cling film. What I did was to basically squash it into a well greased tart tin until it was the right thickness, same as a pound coin. When I made this I used 4 metal individual quiche tins about 4inches across which might make it easier to do.
Saute the onion in a little oil until transparent, remove from the pan. Saute the mushrooms until caramelised and mix with the onion. Chop the courgette and add to the veg mix.
Now stir in a couple of tblsps of thick creamy yogurt and about 25g Fontina. You are aiming for a mix that is coated with yogurt and cheese but not too runny and not too cheesy. Now add 2 lightly beaten eggs and a little salt and lots of fresh ground pepper. Finally stir in the Tandoori spice mix. Divide between the tart tins.
Bake in a medium oven for 20 minutes until puffed and golden.
You can vary the veg to whatever you have of course, I made it in the summer so courgette was in the garden. I particularly like Tandoori masala mix, but any spice mix you fancy could be used, the ubiquitous garam masala would also work.
Let me know what you think and if you try it0 -

evening all. I haven't posted for a couple of days. Thank you Weezl for clarifying purpose and scope of the mission. I have been reading though and copying lots of the lovely recipes. I have tomorrow off work and have bought mustard powder so I intend to test the onion tart recipe and probably the sweetcorn fritters. Hopefully I'll also have time to post the minestrone soup as previously promised and also a frugalised minestrone soup.
I make a pasta bake which is very frugal (I think) and is very filling and comforting but doesn't contain any veg at all. Would anyone be interested? If so I will post.
Just checked an I believe it can be made from the current Asda listSealed pot member 735

Hi guys, if I ever start talking to family/friends/colleagues about being frugal they look at me as if Ive grown two heads so I feel like Ive come home by finding this thread and being able to follow you all - its wonderful. I dont know how helpful I can be on this project but i have found a recipe for sweetcorn fritters that didnt have sugar in it and only used a spray of oil to cook the fritters in - all other ingredients were exactly the same although the eggs were separated and the whites were whisked up - would this make more? or just lighter and maybe not so filling? Let me know what you think, I'd love to know if the fritters need the sugar or not.LBM March 2011 (what on earth took me so long?)overdraft (1) -2950 overdraft (2) -246.00total CC £12,661 :eek:loan £5000DFD 2016:eek::eek: (cant come soon enough)0
