Weezl's phase 1- recipe testing and frugalisation- come one, come all!

A few quick points:
1) Are the recipes tested for foolproofness IYSWIM? It's going to be very demoralising to be on a tiny budget and then have to bin something because it's gone wrong, or tastes inedible. Is there a way of starting of with simple recipes at the beginning of the month, and allowing new people to get used to kitchen skills?
2) Are lifestyle allowances, for want of a better word made? For instance, I suspect it's not realistic to suddenly expect people who are more used to takeaways and not thinking about cooking to be baking 4 loaves of bread twice a week and so on, and they may not have the time if they are in full time jobs.0 -
OK so people can make their own list of favourite versions along the way, but on here we'll have a bob and shirley's most recent recipes list so that the recipe testers don't get confused and check the wrong version?
I still think starting at this end of the thread is the best then?
Have I understood you right there C?

Hi:)
some of the recipes have been tested about 20 times so far and some only once or not yet. I guess a lot of that will depend on how many volunteers we get
We've made a lot of allowances for lifestyle;), but sadly we can't on the bread because the £11 extra pounds it costs each month would mean a health compromise that's too risky. Sorry about that
Does that help? x

Errrmmm.....er...maybe not quite....
Wonders whether in post 2 on this thread we could have a main link (being to the most recent version of a recipe) - with sub-links for versions we have tested along the way.
With this - if someone is looking for the carrot cake recipe for instance - they would go to Post 2 and click on the main carrot cake linkie. Unless they wanted an "older" version of the carrot cake recipe - in which case they would still go to Post 2 and click on the 2nd/3rd carrot cake linkie.
Perhaps the latest version link should be in red on post 2 - and all previous versions of the recipe right underneath it in black?

Carrot cake (version 2)

I'm really sorry all but that would mean me doing all the indexing (as I wrote post 2 initially, and I just don't have the right brain capacity or time for that I'm sad to say

Well, I guess I don't mind that but I think it's going to make a headache later for the person putting shirley's recipes together.
Plus subject to stock taking and prices, these recipes are going to adjust all the time before we get them right, so I think there's going to be about 10-20 versions of each flying around, so I'm just worried it's a bit unworkable
IYSWIM?
I've written my responses above C, hope they help xxx

Am thinking of making this but can [STRIKE]someone tell me what size is the Asda SP cabbage ? I am assuming it is the pickled one ?[/STRIKE] see the SP one is 340g net weight (58p).well hello there one and all
SunnyGirl I look forward to your chutney...
I had a little tinker with one myself today:
Chutney round one:
220g carrot chopped into little dice
400g apple chopped
100g raisins
100g sugar
All of the liquid and half the cabbage from asda red cabbage SP jar
1 can chopped tomatoes
dessertspoon garam masala
carrots still a little al dente, but DH will report back shortly
recipe and photos originally taken from weezl's blog, my mse homepage if you click on my name!:)
I got some pickled red cabbage from Tesco today, not value as our small store does not stock it, [STRIKE]but it is a huge jar and perhaps bigger than the SP one ?[/STRIKE] and ours is 710g net weight (£1.10)....so would need to use half cabbage/liquid compared to your recipe.
As it is I actually only want to make half total amount of chutney to try it, so will use:
110g diced carrot
200g apple
50g raisins
50g sugar
1/4 jar of my sized Tesco pickled cabbage
1/2 can tomatoes (could I use passata ?)
1/4 dst spoon garam masala
Thinking it might go nicely with some of the veggie patties/cutlets/burgers or even a cheese bap ?
What do you store it in and how long does it keep ?
Will report back tomorrow and fill in the survey sheet.
Am I right in thinking there is no survey sheet for the veggie burgers ?Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Hi Weezl & co, I try to read as often as possible but haven't been able to keep up. If it's any help at all, I find page 1, preferably post 1 or as close as, the logical and simplest place for up to date links. It allows newcomers to see right away what's involved and it avoids the need for remembering post numbers in a very busy forum.
Sorry I haven't contributed to results yet but we already have a tightly budgetted grocery list that doesn't allow much leeway for experimentation, especially with ingredients that I already know one or other in this household wouldn't eat. Hoping to try the apple spread this weekend, as buttery spread was on BOGOF and apples on special offer, so I stocked up on both. Will complete the poll once done, if it's still relevant?
I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.
