Feedback: just made this -yummy! Put into a square tin and got 5x3 = 15 slices. Could've prolly gone a wee bit smaller and maybe gotten 16ish...tastes delicious - I threw some cinnamon in as I couldn't imagine a cake with no flavouring :o. There was no cooking instructions, so I did 30 minutes-ish on 175 - I think it prolly needed about 5 more moments as the middle is a wee bit doughy (didn't discover this until I cut it after cooled).

If given a choice between knowing that some chickens get bullied and some children get bullied. I'm really sorry, but I'd make cake for fergus out of battery farmed eggs and I'd put them in his lunchbox. And no I wouldn't feel great about myself. But that's what I'd do.
I think that is a fair point and if it boiled down to that I imagine a lot of people would change their choice. I was going to suggest that free school meals would eliminate that but even with the latest extension of FSMs they don't cover many people and I'm guessing Bob and Shirley would be likely to earn too much to qualify otherwise they wouldn't have been able to get into that much debt in the first place?

I've also been pondering the making the rope attractive issue. I would imagine that the switch from Bob and Shirley's usual food (in terms of general diet, what they are having to sacrifice and the work involved) is probably far bigger than it would be for the majority of people on this thread. (I'm thinking about what the families on "Economy" Gastronomy were like.) Although they might believe the meal planner is possible in terms of providing the nutrition for that price, it's possible that some Bob and Shirleys may find the size of the changes they would need to make too daunting? Perhaps an intermediate planner using a slightly higher budget (but still well below what they would have been spending previously) which gradually introduced the more "extreme" meals and cookery work might help some who might otherwise either rejct it outright or try but not stick to it because it's a big sudden change (the way people do with New Years Resolutions)? Obviously an intermediate plan is a much lower priority than the main plans but I wodnered if it might help to draw more people in to the "full on" plans?

    Hi Weezl and Aless

I've been MIA from the Parents thread for a while - just got so much going on in RL at the moment.

I also made the eggless apple cake today. My comments:

    - I didn't have any bramley apples, so I used two normal eating apples. Two definitely weren't enough as you can barely taste the apple - so bramley apples or more eating apples is definitely the way to go.

    - I didn't put anything extra in, but would definitely put some cinnamon in next time as it was lacking "something".

    - I agree with Aless about the doughy consistency - I baked mine for 25 minutes at 180 degrees. Although I pressed the middle and it rose back up, I didn't stick a cocktail stick in to test it and when I tried turning it out, it was a bit of a gooey mess in the middle :o. I did try putting it back in the silicon tin and cooking it for longer, but I forgot about it and ended up getting it out 20 minutes later. It's now rather brown on top!!

    - TBH, mine is a bit tasteless but I'm 100% certain that's due to the type of apples I used. The consistency of the cake is lovely though.

    - I baked mine in a 8" round silicon mould but the cake mixture filled it and rose quite a lot whilst baking. I would probably use my 9" tin next time.

    - It's possible that you could reduce the vinegar content as I'm sure I can taste it a little (probably due to the lack of apple flavour :rotfl:) but I don't know what effect this would have on the consistency/texture of the final product.

I used Cox apples and it tasted very apple-y. My dough also rose quite a lot, so a bigger tin could definitely eek out more servings. I tested the middle with a knife which came out clean, but it just needed that extra few minutes to be totally cooked IYSWIM. Perhaps a 40-45 minute suggestion for future testers.

We put apple in our porridge (cooked, pureed and frozen into portions when people give them from their trees) and we've found there is a noticable taste difference between cookers and eaters.

    Veggie burgers
    Makes 4 patties??
Made 8 patties, but I was going to serve 2 each, so a portion would be as you've calculated.

Looking at the calories though, I think Bob and DS1 are definitely going to need a double helping :):o

Shirley will too unless she's been on the cake :rotfl:

Thanks, this is soooooooooooooooooooo helpful with keeping it healthy and also sustaining enough :)

The cookbook from earlier eras I think most worth looking out for (for the veggies amongst us anyways...) is:

    "Doreen Keighley's Vegetarian Cook Book"

Its an early 1960s cookbook - so theres a very small range of ingredients used. There might be one or two copies lurking round on Amazon (EDIT: there is - 52 used from 1p).
Hmmmmm... I think my Mum has that one! :T I may well raid her cookery book stash when I go round there tonight - there are loads of 70s and 80s "wholesome" type veggie cookbooks. :j I was so happy to find this one in a charity shop a couple of years ago - I pretty much grew up on food from this or similar books. :D

I definitely had an unusual food upbringing (and a fair bit of bullying as a result). My family stopped eating most meat before I started primary school (only fish and the sausages my grandparents would give us on holiday as a treat survived a bit longer in our diet! :p) We stopped all meat, poultry & fish before I hit secondary school age. I can't remember what any of it tastes like anymore. :D I never had school dinners at primary school as there was never a veggie option. :o

I didn't tend to get many invites round to others for tea and if I did no-one ever knew what to feed me :o - well all except one of my best friends who would invite me round all the time as it meant they got to have Pizza which they usually didn't get to have! :rotfl: I didn't find out shepherds pie normally had meat (we always had a lentil/carrot/onion/celery one) in it til a particularly embarassing meal at a neighbours house!

I'll be up for trying some of the veggie stuff this weekend if I'm feeling a bit better (and can actually taste stuff again :o) .
