If that was all we had then we would use powdered milk in tea and have done at times. We normally buy our milk at an asian shop and at the moment it is 79p for 2litres. We get whole milk but it is for skimmed too.
In the end when you have no money you do what you have to do. Been there done that more than once.0 -

Hi HG is that a typo? I think a tablespoon would be ever so peppery!

thanksthey can have a bit of fresh milk in their tea prob only enough for a couple of cups a day, but that would mean almost no meat and very little variety etc... what do people think would be the priority?

Meat. The diet would be a bit dull without a little meat if you are used to eating meat. I use the chinese idea that meat is a condiment not a keystone of a meal if we are short of money. So long as you get a taste you do not mind.
Also when we lived in Singapore many years ago we only had powdered milk and carnation milk as in those days it was not safe to buy local milk. I spent six years of my childhood there.0 -
can I say what I would probably end up doing if I were Shirley?
I would embrace the plan but adapt it to my family's preference. so if they wouldn't eat the oily fish, I wouldn't serve it but substitute something else from the plan they did like. If powdered milk seemed a step too far I would spend more on milk. I would still be saving significant amounts. I couldn't complain if I spent more than £100 as I would know I wasn't following the plan to the letter. I wouldn't be able to use the excuse "Oh you can't live healthily on that budget" because I would see that we could if we chose to.
My family would be eating a far healthier diet - even if it wasn't a perfect one. And who knows, maybe after they'd adjusted to the first few changes I could sneak some more in as the months went by.
There are lots of people out there who will not eat the pilchards! I've got friends who have made a fuss if I order fish at a restaurant because they think it's so offputting to have it on the table, let alone eat it themselves. But we should all be eating oily fish - so let's include it on the plan.
I know this project is being designed as a comprehensive eating plan, but in real life people are going to pick and choose to a degree. even as testers, we're not all testing the same recipes.
I'm not saying this in a "why bother?" kind of way. I'm just trying to say that we shouldn't think that one or two elements will put people off the whole plan.
Anyway, that's how I would view it were I phizziShirleyweaving through the chaos...0 -

Thats true. I am not a big fan of pasta and am very choosy about it. I do not eat cold pasta at all. With me it is a texture thing and prefer rice anytime.

Hello all,
I'm playing catch-up today as I have had rather a busy few days having a birthday and getting engaged!
I'm still looking at good recipes for a vegan version of this plan but I will definitely get stuck when it comes to omega oils. Personally, I have to say I think it would be easier to not try and get the entire amount of omega 3 in on the budget as so few people actually get their RDA anyway. The rest of nutritional workings are going to be so much better than a lot of people are getting anyway that we're only going to be doing good.
If the family want to add more omega oils then they can buy a supplement quite cheaply if needed. Personally, I'd rather buy a bottle of flax oil (or some kind of tablets) on top of the budget than be eating that much fish (or that many ground flax seeds in the case of the vegans).
P.S. frugal vegan wedding buffet challenge anyone?0 -
