about the milk ... what do people think?
Actually, I'm happy enough with the milk quota, but I suspect we don't consume as much of it as we should. As a family of two adults and two teenagers, we buy four pints of milk a week (which is what Weezl has in the plan). But we eat yoghurt as well (500g to 1kg a week, unflavoured) and quite a lot more cheese and cream cheese than in this plan, so our calcium is coming from other dairy sources as well as milk.
I don't think any plan can possibly hope to accommodate everyone's existing habits or dietary practices. For every family whose teenagers drink a pint of milk each per day, there is probably a parallel family whose teenagers never touch the stuff (yes, I know several like that). This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi Weezl,
Good luck with this new challenge. I would be happy to test some vegan recipes if there are any. I say some incase there is any I don't like. Will test for 2 adults, so will half the recipes, if thats ok. I shall try to take photos also and put the photo on my blog and link back to this thread, as I don't know how to post pictures on here.
I found this thread thanks to ceridwens blog, I usually only look in this OS section and occasionally others if I have time. Thanks for putting it on your blog.

Oooh a new weezl thread
Hope there's no pigs heads this time _pale_
Well having just been made redundant and OH having lost most of his work, I'm very interested in watching this challenge. However, OH would throw a fit if I served a meal without some kind of meat or fishBut I'll eat veggie soup etc for lunches. I've just knocked £100 off our usual monthly food budget without complaints (think the cake baking helps) and will be introducing more frugal changes till they riot
But I'm interested in trying the carrot cake (and have a sweet tooth) - will do this tomorrow. But have no orange so will have to add apple juice or lemon juice?
The stepkids won't eat raisins but me and OH will so will make it for us.
As for milk - I don't do much dairy at all (probably ought to find alternative calcium sources), but OH and the step kids get through 8-10 pints a week. As for tea - 80 bags will only last us about a week as we drink lots of tea.
As for borscht - I don't do cream but I did have one "beetroot soup" recipe that was nice and had no cream in it at all... will search for it later.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Re: Milk I agree that there'll be people/teens who drink it and them that don't. It it were me HAVING to do £100 a month I'd either cut something else out (snacky, baked thing I think) or accept that I'd be spending a little more for the extra milk IYSWIM? My lot aren't big yoghurt eaters - apart from DS2 but he likes the little fromage frais that you can give to babies :rotfl::rotfl: Needless to say I rarely buy them as he'll happily eat 6 at a time.
Re Cheeseless Tart Just a quick thought but how about trying it with cottage cheese? It'd still have some 'stick' to glue everything together, it's a milk protein and still frugal if you buy the plain Smart Price/Value one - any good?
I have added to my shopping list and will be cooking & testing like crazy once Wednesday's come0 -
weezl this is my standard sausage recipe
1 kg minced pork
3 tsp salt
2 grammesblack pepper
1/2 tsp mace
1 tbs dried sage
1 tbs sugar
1/4 pint water
handful breadcrumbs or rusk.
Have tried various variations so far
apple sauce could be added for pork and apple flavour or a pureed cooked apple but most sausagemakers add some dried apple from healthfood shops too

cheap beetroot soup

Gillian McPoo's beetroot soup

Seem to remember I kind of mixed the two and used the cooked packet beetroot but didn't keep any notesSeem to think it was leaning much more towards the shirley goode recipe.

Is it too late to sneak in the backdoor??
I'd love to join in.Put the kettle on.0 -
to make cheaper how about adding one medium sized potato diced finely with the onions?
also, although i haven't finished making it in future i think i would make with just normal pastry. would also add a little cayenne and some mustard powder to filling.
i know mustard powder is not cheap to buy initially but it stores well and can be used in many things.
carrot cake is out of oven and looks lovely!it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:0 -
