pork and apple burger recipe suitablle for frugalising? pork mince has been on offer at Mr A for £1 but not sure of weight

I was thinking weezl what about a basic equipment list too to go with the shopping list and recipes ?

    shaz

Well - they do this in all the best student cookbooks - ie give a list of suggested equipment.

I think the way I would view it personally - is to give a very basic list of equipment (actually - even some student cookbooks list a few bits of equipment that I think are strictly luxury) AND to list substitute bits of equipment that would also work. I'm thinking, for instance, of using an empty wine bottle as a substitute rolling pin - the average student certainly wont have a rolling pin - but might just be able to lay their hands on an empty wine bottle or two:rotfl:

I would love to join in. Affordable new receipes are always welcome and Weezl's aims of trying to create some sort of resource to help others feed themselves well and keep/get out of debt (as I see it) are brilliant. I was fancying the onion tart but I can't eat cheese as it gives me migraine. As others have commented that the cheese is bumping the price up can we come up with something else to use in its place. I am happy to try it out but it may have to wait for a shopping trip if I don't have the ingredients in the house.

I am making pastry for pasties this afternoon so I will make some extra and can always keep it in the freezer for later. HTH

Would almonds or nutritional yeast do as a cheese substitute?

Well - I'd say that individual people could leave out the cheese (presumably?) if they wanted to for one reason or another. I would say that doing so would detract a lot from the taste though actually - and I'm not sure how well the tart would then fit in to the menu plan as a whole (as the whole thing needs checking out for adequate protein intake somewheres along the way...)
  • I would also like to join in- if that is ok Weezl? As you know i like to make the odd frugal recipe and i am always looking for ways to make them healthier as well- reduction in sugar etc.

I will be having a go at the carrot cake and i already make Chick pea curry- not for a while though, so will be testing that one.

Anything with beetroot will be out for me- hate it with a passion!

    Frugal soups are also good.

I quite like to use peelings which make a higher fibre soup, although a lot of peeps may want to check out whether organic or not, but a very good way to use up all of the vegetable.

  • Carrot cake is delicious and light with a little caramelised taste to it. I am not a raisin fan as a rule but I went for it and am glad I did. Really nice to have a recipe where I don't have to go and buy any more ingredients.

    Couple of thoughts
*felt a bit sick pouring in all the oil but not sure why, have you looked at TREX for baking and pastry? Weird looking thing but pretty cheap all in all...
*not a fan of washing up so next time would warm the orange juice in the microwave in the same bowl as the rest of the recipe will be made with
*Used about 1/2 tsp mixed spice. 1/2 nutmeg 1/2 ginger. I tasted the mixture then added a pinch of salt, think the taste difference is in using oil rather than butter but you wouldn't have to do this.

It has stuck a little to my greasproof which is annoying but easy enough to fix :)

Right, off to have a little more with a cuppa whilst my fudge cools (figure the exercise of beating the stuff has earned me some cake!)

    :)

I would get lynched if I was caught doing that.....we had a conversation yesterday about sprouting potatoes and how they should be thrown out:eek:

No way says I and referred him to a thread on here:D

  • It has been mentioned about cake tins on here- well i have successfully used sweet tins and they have turned out fine. Just remember that they will need a lot of greasing. :)

  • I helped out with a conference at church yesterday and was given some fruit to bring home. They had done chilli and jacket potatoes and I asked to have some potatoes to bring home too. I had potato skins for lunch by scooping out and mashing the potato with some butter and seasoning, popping in the skin with a little bit of brie and some chopped fresh tomato and a sliver of cheese on each one. Gotta love the recycling.
Have made chips before with peelings, a little space intensive though, have to be thinly spread to crisp up, delish with parsnip and carrot peelings though!

:rotfl: Do you know the potato skins, make it lovely and creamy and when the soup is whizzed up tastes very thick and satisfying. Serve with HM bread and he won't argue:D

I just pick the sprouts off too;) :rotfl:
