I'm going to make the onion tart for dinner tonight.

we were meant to be going to a friend's house for dinner but DD2 isn't well, so we had to cancel. I was rummaging through the freezer, trying to work out what I could cook that would defrost in time (no microwave) so this recipe is perfect! the girls love quiche (yes, is that normal? I don't think so!) so they'll be pleased, esp when I tell them we're testing it for the 50p lady!

I'll make it with less cheese, but I will be using wholemeal flour as that's all I have at the mo.

    Hi All

I would love to join in too. I have already costed some dishes I make for my own interest - I know it's sad :p

I do a lentil, spinach and chick pea curry, which I can post and I have started experimenting with Naan bread recipes as well.

I have subscribed to this thread - will catch up with it tonight. In the middle of a massive declutter challenge and I am listing stuff on freegle like mad :D

Popping on quick to let you know I'm good to go for the tart. Only problem being my mum offered to buy the bits I needed and ignored all the bits about value on my list! She bought normal Mr T flour, single cream instead of milk  and Colemans mustard powder *rolleyes* hey ho, she did also insist on paying for it too so my tart comes in at 0.00p :D

I've worked out the actual costings and considering nothing is value it works out around the 2.20 mark. So I know I should be flamed but I'm a girl that pops to the shop for tea and spends 20 quid :rotfl:

Plus might I add this is the first time I've ever attempted or indeed thought about making party so please let me off :D

just been on the Tesco website to cost the carrot cake and onion tart - I checked prices on ingredients that I would use (free range eggs, cathedral city cheese etc) so I know it could be done much cheaper.

cake came in at £2.76 - but 92p of that was eggs alone, and 31p for an orange. but even at that price it's only 8p a slice so would go a long way for lunch boxes and snacks.

tart came in at £1.95 - but if I useddifferent cheese and onions from local farm would be cheaper.

now, I need to stop doing geeky maths and actually go and cook something!

potty, yep, great point on the stork... but I can't fit both in the budget, so they'd either have toast with stork on, bleurgh :( or bake with the butterly stuff.....

What do people think is for the best?

Hmm....well I actually chucked out most of a packet of Stork the other day when I spotted summat "chemical" in it - not very MSE I know. I WAS wondering whether anyone who wanted a cheaper alternative to a buttery spread might be able to use summat like "Crisp and Dry" (ie a hardened "bar" of vegetable oil that I got from SainsbUry's the other day). Dont know what the taste of this would be like or whether one can make pastry with it or no - I would imagine its possible to? It says one of the uses is baking. (Errr....I actually bought it thinking I'll try and see what it would be like as cheapie "natural" moisturizer/body lotion....sorta dual purpose usage in that way if it works okay....:)). It was pretty cheap - summat like 60p for a large "bar" of it - and I couldnt spot any chemical nasties in it.

Obviously - the "buttery" version will be "richer" tasting - but this would be cheaper if it works...(and, if so, you could put up 2 versions - a cheap one and an even cheaper one IYSWIM).

EDIT: I'll be getting my missing ingredients in for testing so far when I go shopping tomorrow hopefully - so will be testing later in the week.
  • Ok do not make the carrot cake by my volume measurements. Tastes nice but think quantity of oil too high. Cake did not come out of (nice poncy sillicone) tin properly, half stuck the rest has broken up. DS age 3 declares it delicious though!

Well...nothing ventured, nothing gained. After all - any "mistakes" could have a bit of yogurt poured over the top of them and serve as pudding.
  • I would love to join in. Affordable new receipes are always welcome and Weezl's aims of trying to create some sort of resource to help others feed themselves well and keep/get out of debt (as I see it) are brilliant. I was fancying the onion tart but I can't eat cheese as it gives me migraine. As others have commented that the cheese is bumping the price up can we come up with something else to use in its place. I am happy to try it out but it may have to wait for a shopping trip if I don't have the ingredients in the house.

I am making pastry for pasties this afternoon so I will make some extra and can always keep it in the freezer for later. HTH
