I phoned AQE today. Unfortunately I have a horrendous cough at present and had to get off the phone very quickly.

I asked them if they were going to publish more guidance on the breakdown of these marks, quintiles etc and how many kids were in Quintile 1 and 2. They said they weren't and the information we got on Saturday was sufficient. I told her it was anything but and has led to shock, despair, misconceptions etc regarding what it all means.

She told me that my child's mark of 104 is "excellent" so that is reassuring for me at least although I wonder if she is saying that for all marks. Furthermore she told me that the top mark achieved was 128 and that only a couple of kids got anything like this.

I hope to phone them back when I can manage to speak for more than 30 seconds without coughing but it would be great if anyone else could call them and see what they can find out.

I don't understand their range of 55-145, the lowest I've heard is nowhere near 55 and the highest nowhere near 145. GL results are more straightforward as you're given the raw score.
  • ex spendahaolic - AQE told you 128, told a lady another blog 127 and Maggie Taggart the BBC 130 - they may not know themselves!!

I go to my daughter's primary school tomorrow for my interview so I'll let you all know if I get any clearer breakdown in relation to grades/equivalences. We are looking at some schools in South Belfast and some in Lisburn.

I have now found out in my daughter's school the highest was 124 (a boy and girl) and the lowest 92.
  • I think grammer schools and primray schools should seriously consider putting everyones minds @rest before the 28th of may :T.My son got 113 but done extremely well in his class tests from p6 getting scores like 72 outta 75 etc so i was shocked at a boarderline 113 .Im still worried with the ranking system that this wont b good enough every parents nightmare i thought this would have been easy but we r all still waiting . I wish they would even do a news report 2 set parents minds @rest before we all turn grey. Well done 2 all the kids for dealing with the whole process .:j
  • bigbiff....my sons headmaster told me this morning that he phoned B.R.A and they said they will be accepting 98 or 99 so that my son should have no problems getting in with 104 xxx

The marking system seems to be what is causing people a lot of concern - my son's situation is the same as yours, he frequently scored around 90% in practice tests and he knew himself within 2-3% roughly what his score would be and he was unerringly accurate. He sat the 3 AQE tests and was quite confident that there were only a few questions which he may have got wrong. He expected to have a mark of around 90 - 95%. So it came as something of a surprise to all of us that his score was 118. But now as I read and hear of more scores his does start to look very respectable indeed. As his birthday is early July he obviously lost some marks there but there does seem a big discrepancy if maximum was 145 and highest is 127, 128 or 130 depending on which post you read.

Victoria will give you the percentile rank. My friend's daughter got 115 which gives a percentile score of 85%. She was a lot happier when she heard this and is more confident of a place in a grammar school.

    Hello forum,
    Interesting reading so far.

I have an ex colleague who now works closely with the AQE office.
He told me that my daughters score of 116 equates to 89%.
Additionally he confirms that the top NI AQE score was 128.

We attended the Banbridge Academy open night.
I can confirm that the principal expects to accept most applicants from bands one, two, three and some from band four.
In discussion with many principals and senior teachers from Lisburn and Banbridge area grammar schools, I get a feeling that under subscription is a real possibility.

Hold your nerve and place your preferred school as number one.
Do not be put off by last years admission data. We are operating in a whole new environment this year.

    Good luck.

Is this her percentile rank, ie she's in the top 11%, or her actual percentage mark?
  • To all the parents out there. It is comments like the ones I have read today that make the system as complicated as it is. Trying to justify a disappointing score by any mathematical jiggery pokery will not change the score. For years we have all heard about B1 scores who only missed an A by 1 mark etc. This year we actually got a score. Relax, congratulate your child and take the advice given by your primary school head. All this just adds to the childrens sense of worry and disappointment.
