The trueth is they have been on our streets for decades, nothing new there.. Remember the IRA, special forces, intellengence units and surveilance were all used even here in the uk. They were also used in the july bombings and suspect they are active now. Nothing to be worried about, life as normal.
We could simply deploy the yeomany again to supress riots like in the napoionic wars
Not to mentiont he SAS and the Iranian emabassy siege, then again Winston Churchill (greatest Britain) turning the troops on the miners
As Home Secretary, Winston Churchill used troops to maintain law and order during a miners strike in South Wales. He also used a detachment of Scots Guards to assist police during a house siege in Sidney Street in East London in January 1911. Whilst such actions may have marked him down as a man who would do his utmost to maintain law and order, there were those who criticised his use of the military for issues that the police usually dealt with'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. However this bit leaves me cold. Kohutek strikes me as a pretty sane poster, and sleepwalking into a police state is something I'm absolutely not in favour of. Yet it is something you (Asheron) constantly allude to. You've even started using sources that I may even read. Heck I'm confused now.
No, I think your very close to the truth, it's good, try some alternative news websites. We have a large police force that is trained to maintain law and order. Soldiers are trained to kill, not to police. If the government implements these insane proposals during a terrorist scare, we'll see a Charles de Menezes every week, if not every day.
Everyone should be alarmed by these proposals...just think of what Northern Ireland was like during the Troubles when the British government tried to use soldiers as police.
At best it's a very ill-conceived policy, at worst it's a step towards a police state.
Charles de Menezes was killed by the police. The Army is trained to a much higher degree with split second decisions - much more so than the police. If the police were trained and reliable than I would be worried by this, but time after time we witness poor attitude/training and 'odd' priorities..
Besides, if the Government see fit to do this, then it's an acknowledgement they too have lost faith in their own police force??0 -

Yep, which we are quite literally still paying for.0 -

In a democratic state, in the absence of a foreign invasion, the sole function of the military is to fight wars abroad. One usually associates the military being used against a state's own people with totalitarian regimes. Terrorism is an internal threat posed by a relatively small number of individuals. The police and MI5 are the appropriate organs of state to deal with it.
Just look at the precedents for the use of the British army within the UK. You think the army are better at making decisions about who is a terrorist than the police? Try comparing de Menezes with Bloody Sunday, where the army killed not one, but 14 unarmed civilians. At least we have an independent police complaints commission, not so with the army. There was no inquiry into Bloody Sunday under 26 years later.
Do you think Catholics during the Troubles had any rights, despite the fact they were UK cititzens, when our military killed them indiscriminately and conspired with Protestant terrorist groups? Pat Finucane, for example, was murdered by a proxy group for daring to challenge the British government's appalling human rights record. He was branded a IRA 'terrorist' for a while until the truth got out.
There is no more legitimate justification whatsoever to deploy the army on our streets, than as Hamish says, to arrest a 80 year old heckler at a party conference with the Terrorism Act.0 -

You have to love the official (Home Office Scientific Development Branch) blurb on some of the riot control stuff
