This forum has found its natural constituency. It's all a conspiracy.
    Been away for a while.
  • This is hardly new news. The laws brought in, ostensibly, to protect us from terrorism are being used against people. The freedoms we have enjoyed are being curtailed and to a degree the terrorists have won. Flying is now a chore, people are harrassed in the streets for taking pictures, councils snoop on parents, the Police steal innocent people's DNA, people fined for feeding the ducks in the park. Bonkers. We are not anywhere near a totalitarian state but we are all treated as suspects now by one of the surliest, small minded, bureaucracies we have ever had.

They even take peoples kids away now, where they get abused in the government care system.

I would personally like to have troops on the street. I would hazzard a guess you'd get a much better response to crime and a more 'direct' way of dealing with it!

We have a large police force that is trained to maintain law and order. Soldiers are trained to kill, not to police. If the government implements these insane proposals during a terrorist scare, we'll see a Charles de Menezes every week, if not every day.

Everyone should be alarmed by these proposals...just think of what Northern Ireland was like during the Troubles when the British government tried to use soldiers as police.

At best it's a very ill-conceived policy, at worst it's a step towards a police state.

This is what I love about your posts Asheron, I'm with Hamish, so I'm never quite sure whether to be alarmed or amused by them. I'm hoping that the above is a joke, right. If so, I found it genuinely funny. If not, er, sorry....

However this bit leaves me cold. Kohutek strikes me as a pretty sane poster, and sleepwalking into a police state is something I'm absolutely not in favour of. Yet it is something you (Asheron) constantly allude to. You've even started using sources that I may even read. Heck I'm confused now.

Whilst there is little doubt that Asheron is King of the conspiracy crackpots, and that his overly alarmist posts are all a bit bonkers, the underlying concern regarding a police state, better expressed by Kohoutek, is sound.

Under Labour we have become a surveillance society, with council officials using anti-terrorism laws to snoop through peoples rubbish, spy on their kids, intercept their emails and post, and all to check school catchment areas or combat dog fouling.

We have more CCTV cameras per person than anywhere on earth. Traffic cameras record our movements. We are the most photographed society on earth. And the police can collect DNA for something as trivial as a traffic offense, and keep the DNA of innocent people for years.

The potential for abuse is breathtaking. The intent of the nanny state to try and control every aspect of our life is well proven, and deeply troubling. And the current state of affairs with anti-terror laws is deeply illiberal.

When an 80 year old man can be dragged out of a party conference by the Police and arrested under anti-terrorism powers, merely for stating the word "rubbish", it is well past the time to be afraid of sleepwalking into a police state.
