    Hi

I live in quite a rich area I suppose and it seems to me that families are always going abroad, skiing in half term, that sort of thing.

I tend to do day trips in the summer with my little man but this year he wants to try camping so we will have a go at that for a few days. We also visit family and friends, sometimes just for the night, but it gives us a change of scenery.

My neice and nephew (twins aged 9) are always off abroad at the start of every school year and go to some lovely sounding places but their parents are always moaning about it afterwards (!) saying it was too hot for the kids, the food wasn't appropriate, etc.

I think that as long as you're children get experiences of life it makes no difference whether you are at home or elsewhere.

My daughter never went abroad till she was 21. My son has never been abroad and he's 19! We bought a secondhand towing caravan when they were small for £500, complete with everything. We joined the Caravan Club and used to go away for £2 - £3 a night at Caravan club sites. Sometimes we also went to better sites with more facilities. Used all the food from home, so apart from petrol not a lot of expense! Ours even took their bikes with us, just put them inside the van. Maybe you could think along those lines.

  • My little girl who is 5 has never been on holiday as we just cannot afford it, there is no money spare at the end of the month to save up, so we just dont go! I have no idea how other people afford multiple holidays every year, maybe credit cards? I do feel sorry for her, and us! as I would love a couple of weeks somewhere hot, she has never been on a plane and has no idea what that is like.
When my partner takes his annual holiday we either have cheap days out or go to stay with family in South Wales, visit the beaches there etc, not the same as the Caribben but better than nothing.

My dream is to take her to Disneyland Florida as everyone else seems to have been there in her class apart from her! But unless we win the lottery tomorrow, that is not going to happen :-(

Don't feel bad, holidays pass in the blink of an eye anyway.

My friend enjoys camping do any of you do that?

The sun does vouchers for cheap holidays too.

I can count my adult holidays on one hand:
    - 1986, week in a flat in the UK with a bf
    - 1992, week in a flat in the UK with sister
    - 1994, week in a house in the UK, with sister (she paid for it)

Holidays are just too expensive - and on your own I don't see any joy in going.

Also, mostly, in my working life I've had no paid holidays (it's a fairly new law to have to pay holidays), so often booking a holiday would have meant paying for a holiday and losing a week's wages. I always said "I'd rather buy a rug for my house than have a holiday ... at least you get to enjoy that every day for years".
  • we don't have holidays either... our last one was our honeymoon in 2005 (and that was only because MIL and FIL paid for it as a wedding gift)
its not that we couldn't afford it (if we saved up for a while) i think im getting tighter as i get older, i can't seem to justify spending all that money & spending money for such little time, and there always seems to be other things to spend it on IYKWIM.

i do prefer it that way as we do go out every now and again for day trips etc, whereas if we had a big holiday a year we probably wouldn't be able to do that.

I think holidays are very important. Irrespective of where you go - they are very important for adults and children alike.

They are memorable and special. Especially for children.

You don't need to spend a fortune to go somewhere for a holiday. You just need some imagination and some application. Job done.

My other half and I have been one 2 holidays in the last 3 years, One to america and one in devon, for the last 2 years we've not been anywere. Partly because we can't afford it and partly because when he was employed he couldn't take time off in the summer - the house is devon is relatives but didn't want to go when it's not good weather and now he's self employed we just can't afford the expense of a week away.

That said we do hope to manage 1 week down there this year, but i'm not holding my breath that it's going to happen.

I dont go on holiday but then again I think the fact that there is just me and no partner or kids etc plays a big part. Also I wouldnt be able to afford one anyway.

If I had the money I dont think I'd go. I no longer think there is anywhere I want to go that I havent been already and also where is the fun in doing things if there is nobody to share it with? I think I would find I was just as alone, bored and lonely just in a different location and at a cost.
