Does anyone else not go on holiday

We didn't have holidays for many years - it's great that people can afford them, but we weren't able to. Actually struggling to find affordable one this year in the UK - they all seem to have gone up. It's hard meeting everyone's needs too - one with really bad dog phobia, big crowds also a problem, & noise..... However we DO use the 2 months with no council tax specifically to go into the holiday - one year we rented a lovely cottage, in the summer holidays for a week, for '2' but when I 'phoned it did have an extra fold-out bed & was fine for children, one of the best holidays we've ever had - it cost £200 (6 years ago) which was exactly the no-council-tax-months' total. :j We're thinking of saving tokens this year, but not sure if that would work re the people, dogs & noise thing - just to be clear, it's not a choice but comes with the Asperger's, oh well we'll get there somehow!
I completely agree - holidays are a luxury, and time together is the most important.
Also cheap weekends away - ie Saturday night in a hotel, Friday if really pushing the boat out - really feel like a much longer holiday.0 -
Yep, holidays are a luxury - not a necessity. Lovely if you can afford them, but if you really can't then I think staying at home is better than getting into debt.
Our last holiday (self-catering appartment) was in 2007, and we have booked a fortnight in France this year in May (£600 including self-catering accommodation for 2 weeks and return journey on the Channel Tunnel). I am really looking forward to it, but we will be working to a budget while we are there - possibly a couple of meals out (mostly fixed price lunches!) - but mainly exploring the supermarkets, which we enjoy because in a different country it can actually be a lot of fun! We will be saving up in advance (we are already doing this...) and only spending what we have - so no credit card bill hangovers to spoil the memories when we get home!!

I'm fairly well travelled as an adult, I've been to some quite varied and interesting places, both far-flung, and here in the UK.
But as a child, I went on 3 caravan holidays in my whole life
Loved them all, and understood that it was only money preventing us from going more frequently.
As such, I really appreciate my travels now. I can afford one holiday per year, plus usually one weekend break, but I'm really careful about where I choose to go, and really make the most of it.
I love the occasional beach holiday (Spain, etc.), but I don't tend to do that very often. I don't really believe in spending hundreds, even thousands, for a week's lazing about in the sun, doing nothing.
One of my most enjoyable breaks was a weekend in Belfast. I bought the flight tickets for £5 each, stayed in the Travelodge, and had a very ordinary weekend, just walking around, eating out, etc.£1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50/£600
HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500
"3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600 :eek:0
