Talk Talk Nightmare

Hi

I moved house in October and signed up with talktalk for phone and internet.

My phone was connected by mid November and my broadband activation date was given as 26 December.

Then apparently, my order hadnt gone through properly so I was given a new date of 26 January. After much haggling I managed to secure a measly £12 discount off my next bill for the inconvenience.

26 January arrives and you guessed it, still no internet! I rang them and was told that someone hadn't updated the order and they didnt have a date for the broadband going live.

They were supposed to ring me to give me a new date last week but didnt bother. When I phone them, they cant usually get in the system to check.

I'm sick of waiting around now and as far as I can see, I have 30 days to cancel my contract BUT from the date broadband goes live.

How the heck can I get away from them as it seems I'm never going to get up and running with my broadband.

Ive also read other threads on here saying the connection is rubbish anyway, I really wish I'd never heard of them now.

Am I within my rights to phone and cancel the whole package, tell them to switch my phone line off and keep their stupid broadband?

Also, which ISP is a good alternative (apart from AOL who I wouldnt touch either due to past terrible service).

Thank you

Welcome to the wonderful world of TalkTalk. AOL is the same company (all part of CPW).
Depends on your exchange-broadband is exchange specific.
Go to https://www.samknows.com, do an exchange search, look for your available LLU operators.
Bear in mind that if they have already LLU'd your line, you will need to take this back to BT for line rental before you can sign up with any other ISP for broadband.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hello and thank you for that info.

Just checked and I get these:

    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    AOL LLU
    Bulldog LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    Tiscali LLU
    Tiscali TV (via Tiscali LLU)
    Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)

Do you think it is possible to leave my contract without the broadband being live as it says 30 days from the date it goes live, but looks like that will be the 12th of never!! :(

Also I paid a £60 connection fee to them, will I have to pay that sort of amount again to another company?

Very little LLU choice there (Tiscali also part of TT now). Stay away from Orange.
You could look at Plusnet Value (non LLU company) which on a Market 3 exchange would be £5.99pm (but it's a 10GB cap). samknows will tell you your exchange classification. Quidco cashback available. Plusnet also do a call package.
I'd imagine you can cancel now, but put it in writing by recorded delivery and state why you believe TT are in breach of their contract.
If TT did a physical line install and that is what your connection charge was for, you won't get that back. Very few ISP's other than TT charge for broadband connection-usual TT charge is £29.99.
But remember you have to take the line back to the BT network to use another ISP's broadband. If the package you took was TT Essentials at £6.99, then your line will now be LLU'd.

I signed up with their £17.99 per month phone and broadband package. Will my line still be LLU'd even if they havent switched the broadband on?

The £60 connection fee entailed them sending an engineer out who spent about 15 mins outside and was doing something at the local telephone exchange then the phone was enabled. There was a physical phone socket in the house from the previous residents but obviously they had disconnected when they left.

I have tt's router here so presumably I would need to return that to them too? That is a good idea with the recorded delivery letter - will I be OK to cancel my direct debit once I have paid the latest bill?

I have heard of plusnet before so I think I will look into that. I suppose if I ring tt tonight one last time and they are bound not to have a date, then I just tell them I'm writing to cancel?

    thanks

Hello! Just wanted to add that I used to be with Bulldog (who are on your list) before I moved house -and they were marvellous. Not the cheapest option, but the most reliable and consistant internet connection I've ever had.
Wins for 2009: Nada, Zip, Zilch :(

Is that price incl line rental?-sounds like TT Essentials if so (£6.99 calls and broadband, £11.49 line rental).
You need to check your T&C's re the router.
I suggest you put your number into the Plusnet line checker and see if it is recognised as a BT number, if not, then your line has been LLLU'd, as I suspect it has.

Until Pipex took them over, then Tiscali, now under TT...

Sorry should read LLU (Local Loop Unbundled).
It's the line that is either LLU or non-LLU, not the broadband service.
