    There was a trial I heard of a while back of using pictures of common objects and you had to enter the name of the object.
    The idea being as humans a picture of a cat is easy to recognise but hard for a computer to do.
    The only problem is people can't spell and they would have to have the word "cat" in hundreds of different languages for the various world wide sites.

    If it's the system I think you mean (ie. kitten auth), you don't type anything. It works by showing you a dozen pictures and you have to click the pictures with a cat in them.

    I think one issue with this is that a site would only be able to store a finite number of images and spammers could eventually build a database to allow a computer to crack this.

    Some spammers even employ humans who are willing to work for little pay to solve the CAPTHAs for them.
