Title After Marriage....

...I was wondering, I'd like to keep my surname if I get married. Does that mean I can only change my title to Ms. or can I be Mrs.? Do I stay as Miss?

Help me out, I'm confused :D

  • I might be wrong, as I'm only 19 and not married, but I was taught that Mrs is married, Miss is single and Ms is widowed or divorced...or a mistress in France :rotfl:

So I think you'd be Mrs...your surname, but then that'd be your mum too...Hmm.
    Signature down for maintenance :rotfl:
  • I guess it is up to you but the sensible one would be Ms as it isnt marriage specific

I would assume it would be Ms but don't know for sure.

    Are you actually getting married?

Just out of interest why do you want to keep your name and not change? If my missus even suggested keeping her name after marriage I'd not be happy.

I just asked OH and he said he's assumed I'd keep mine :p

He says 1) he thinks my name is more interesting and 2) he doesn't care :D

    Does anyone know for sure?

I often hear women say they will keep there name if they get married, but when they actually are getting married take the mans name which is why I asked if shes actually getting married IYKWIM

I will take my partners name when we get married, but, like you, he wouldn't like it if I didn't want to.
  • What about double barreling your name.i did this when i got married as i didnt want to lose my last name, but instead of having my last name-his last name(eg: a-b) i swapped it over so my maiden name is last (eg b-a) that way if people shorten it im still my maiden name!hope that wasnt too confusing!!

Csh, when I say I might be, I've been with the bloke for 6 years and my opinion on my name has never changed throughout.

Might just be the way I am but I am soooo proud of my name. It's different and it's part of who I am.... Luckily I've found someone who doesn't mind!!

Double barrelling would be ridiculous in my circumstances as my surname is Indian and his is 100% English... would sound so silly! Well, it does to me

    Anyway... Mrs or Ms?!?!?!

Plenty of women keep their surnames after marriage. You can use any title you like - I know people that use Miss, Ms and Mrs with theirs!
I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I have a few friends who've taken both, e.g. Mr Smith and Miss Jones became Mr and Mrs Smith-Jones. If he prefers your name might be worth considering?

(I took DH's but keep mine for a personal bank account and would use mine professionally...In that case I'd be Miss Lost I. Rates, not Mrs Rates.)
