How do you manage the finances in your relationship?

  • The way we play it is to largely keep everything separate. When I moved in, my partner (who has 2 girls) lost nearly £800 of benefits a month so was just left with about £600 of salary from her part time job. So we decided that I would pay the rent and the bills, and she buys the food. It means that my outgoings are the same as what they were before I moved in, which is fine by me, and it also means that she has some money left over to treat herself to things that she wants without feeling she has to ask anyone for permission to do it.

We're not married but I dare say what we're doing now wouldn't change in the event of us tying the knot - it works really well for both of us.
