Mobile speed camera direction question please

Hello All
I was driving along a road yesterday at night , when I observed a speed camera van about 10 feet in front of me parked in a layby
I applied the brakes as I was doing roughly 38 in a 30
As I drove past the van , I noticed a camera ( Box type ) mounted on a tripod in front of the van
I glanced down at the speedo and It was reading 30
I drove back past the tripod camera to have a look at it as I had originally done and noticed that as you approached it the facing side of the tripod camera ( box shaped ) was black glass effect with acouple of LED lights on it . The other side of the Box as you drove past it was metal BUT with a telecopic bit about 6 inches long sticking out of it like a camera lense I suppose
Now my question is , Does anyone know this type of camera ? and does this type clock your speed as you drive towards it or as you pass it . If its the latter I should be ok .
Second question , if this is the type that clocks your speed as you go past it , how far roughly does it take your speed as you pass the mobile camera box
Many Thanks Guys

It sounds like an ANPR camera & if so it doesn't measure speed.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0

Forgot to say the camera box was quite big and mounted on a small tripod about 18 inches 2 feet of the ground0

If you are so concerned that you don't want to be caught speeding and have to come on here (for whatever reason), then simply observe and adhere to the speed limit. It's pretty easy, although I see you managed the first part but still chose to exceed it.
(Cue excuses...)0 -
why were you doing 38 if you knew the limit was 30mph??0

Still sounds like anpr but you'll know for sure within 14 days

I wouldn't worry about it, sometimes you can't move in threads for all the Halos floating around
