Lynne Truss is on the side of the extra S (and so, apparently, is Fowler's Modern English Usage) Apparently, 'tastes have changed in the matter'

She says that with modern names ending in s, the s is required after the apostrophe. (Page 55-56, Eats, Shoots and Leaves.)

I wasn't taught grammar at school, I just go on instinct, which is why I have to refer to books in order to contribute to such a debate :)

:rotfl:Lynne Truss is a bit of a marmite figure. Have you seen the book 'Eats, !!!!!s and Leaves'? :rotfl: I must admit, I have both! ;)

Oh, just when things were going so well! If you read the previous posts Choc you'll see that Martin is only getting away with it because he's chosing it as his personal style. From a purely grammatical perspective, it's wrong, or maybe as open for discussion as the rest of the English language!

But Martin has made his choice, and has chosen to bend the rules slightly. Which I find interesting given that his site is all about following the rules to ones best advantage :p

Martin's not "getting away with it" he's doing it right. I agree it's a matter of choice which is why I said it doesn't NEED a second S but he's not doing it wrong. Lynne Truss may be in favour of the second S but by her own admission she's a journalist not a grammarian, so she's just stating her preference. Don't mean to sound all grumpy - I'm a friendly soul really ;)

  • Ah, love it or hate it. The problem is I love Marmite but I QUITE like Lynne Truss; I don't have strong feelings about her either way.

An extra S for plural is not required when the name ends in an S. Just the ' is required. Therefore Lewis' is correct.

Strictly speaking it's not plural but possessive that we're discussing.

Well, having read the bit I'm talking about, she doesn't come across as putting her preference across. She says even grammarians disagree on the matter, and she says tastes have changed... to me that says it's kind of up in the air, and you could build convincing arguments for either side.
