If the post office was 30 miles away and you were disabled, would they expect you to cart it there (on the bus?) to return it? Do they know that these are not your circumstances?

Oh it was a mistake! I thought they sent one for her to cook with, and one to hit you over the head with! I remember getting baking tins for my birhtday once, oh, they were good ones! He's NEVER lived it down.0

As the goods are "unsolicited" then you are under no obligation to put yourself out to send them back.
It's up to Amazon to go and collect them.
I would tell them to collect it especially if it's not convenient.0 -
Definitely put the onus on them. I made a big mistake last year when I got a faulty DVD player off them, they made me post it back with the postage receipt in the package to get a refund on the postage! - I know how stupid that sounds, I actually had to pay, take the parcel back, open it, put the receipt inside and repackage it. They did this to me 3 times because the whole batch of DVD players were faulty!My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

You have told them about the mistake. As has been mentioned the onus is on them. Wait until you here from them telling you how they are going to collect it. I'd tell them to come to you to collect, but only between the hours of 16:00 to 16:30 on the 6th Wednesday of each month or as an exception on the 30th February. There're bound to give up, especially as you're on the Isle of Wight!0

Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna be bothered to send it back, or contact them again. I'll just wait for them to contact me again. The e-mail I got from Amazon was from one of those do not reply to addresses, which means I will have to explain the situation to them again and again and again. God knows what will happen if the item is lost in the post, or they don't refund the postage...
The main reason for buying on-line is that you save yourself the traffic jams, the queues etc. and the whole process is painless. Returns should be painless too especially if there are bulky items involved.
I might be mistaken, but in the past I think Amazon provided return labels with the invoices (or some other online retailer did).
I've been quite pleased with Amazon's service so far, they deliver fast (never got an item late) and their prices usually vary from reasonable to excellent. Not to mention that they don't charge an arm and a leg to deliver to the island (unlike some other online retailers). But this return policy, is a bit of a pain.
I do get the feeling that I'm being a bit unreasonable, they don't ask for the world, just to post the item back...It's the pain at the post office I'm more concerned about.
On a different note, even if you buy your girlfriend/wife a mop and a bucket as a present, she should be happy! It's the thought that counts!

Dunno about mop, bucket, or iron... But I would love a pressure cooker! Not in the same league as far as I'm concerned. I think you should have kept it to yourself... How do they manage to send two anyway? Maybe the packer took a shine to your name...0

Legally speaking I believe there is a difference between unsolicited and faulty goods.
For faulty goods you would be expected to return it whereas for unsolicited goods it's not your responsibility to return it.
If you don't like Amazons return procedure then it may be worth considering purchasing through another route e.g. a shop that you can easily get to.
Many cheap electronic goods have a high % of faulty ones (especially if was a very cheap DVD player), so I am afraid this is only to be expected.
I bought a cheap DVD player from Argos specifially because I knew there would be no hassle taking it back.0
