  • Hi guys, just reading this interesting thread and wonder if you could clarify something for me.

I have Co Pilot N.A installed on my iphone which i hope to use when i visit Texas in may.

Can anyone confirm that if I switch off data roaming and 3g, the app will still work ?

I wasnt sure that the iphone has a proper gps , but from reading your comments i think it may . I have the iphone 3g

Additionally i may pick up a sim like you describe, not for the sat nav but so i can use facebook and web browsing. that i have now become addicted too !. thanks for this good idea.

Co-Pilot will work fine, there is a lot of misinformation and lack of knowledge in this thread, you dont need any data for Co-Pilot or TomTom to work, I think some people are mixing GPRS and GPS up.

Both the 3G and 3GS have a built in GPS receiver for satnav which communicates with the satellites for satnav. GPRS / UMTS is whats used for data.

GPS will work even without a network signal, or even a simcard inserted in the phone.

  • Thanks Dave.

Thats what i was thinking originally but was getting mixed messages, i have even had reply from alk that said it can not be used without data. although i think i may have confused them by refering to the product as co pilot live ( and they possibly assumed i was talking about the live features which i realise would need data )... still i explained to them i knew nothing so you would have thought they would have tried to clarify my question first.

Today I also cunningly switched off data roaming and 3g on my phone and tried the GPS page in the settings of co-pilot and noticed it was changing as i drove around. same with google maps this proving that the 3g does defo have GPS. ( i only have the north america co pilot, so everywhere in the uk comes up as unamed road hence my reliance ont the gps page.

    Cheers again. Dean

you can even try taking the sim out and you will see that Co-Pilot still works.

You can see the full specification for the 3G at http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs-3g.html

If your going to Texas, Cingular wireless (which is really AT&T apparently) had the best coverage (or so I found).

Also I could save you a trip.. wouldn't recommend Texas ;) But if you insist on going.. Austin (party place) San Antonio (tourist place), Houston (a giant maze of motorways) as for the rest of it meh.. although Corpus Christi does have a good coffee shop! Anyway, enough thread de-railing :D
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
