buy tomtom USA/canada app then u wouldnt need a 3G signal to use it and also u would accrue any data charges as the maps would be on ur phone0

If you have any access over there to download apps without incurring data charges then I think I remember reading CoPilot is now free without voice prompts.0

if you have the maps installed on your iPhone, you wont need a data connection for navigation.====0

There is said to be quite a lot of free wi-fi in USA, though this would presumably vary a lot between urban and rural areas.
I don't know a straight answer, and need to look a bit more over the next day or two. It doesn't seem as easy to find data packages on payg SIMs there, and what's more one potentially interesting scheme was apparently withdrawn by AT&T a couple of months ago.0 -
There is a lot of free WiFi here in the US. A lot of Airports, mcdonalds, Starbucks, etc. And pretty much all hotels have free WiFi. It all depends on where you will be staying and visiting. You will likely find an open/free connection somewhere. If you do want to use 3G, say while you a traveling/driving on your Iphone, then pick up an AT&T sim on ebay, walmart, target, etc. or just walk into an AT&T store and ask for a prepaid sim. The Iphone supports the 3G bands used by AT&T.0

I'd say definitely try and get a local payg SIM as "roaming" data charges are such a rip off.0

The best option for payg data is AT&T, which is still extremely poor compared to what you can get here. It's $19.99 for 100MB which is vailid for 30 days.0
