No MOT , No TAX - What to do?
Hello,
My father recently passed away and his 2 cars are currently not MOT'd or TAX'd they have not been road legal for around 6 months. They are currently sitting in the drive at his address and are a high attraction for burgulars as they are quite expensive cars. The house is currently sitting empty and unoccupied. I do stay in a private flat with residential parking below the bulding in a secured area.
I would like to move the cars to my house which is about 10 minute drive, what do you suggest i do. I cant drive them to get them MOT'd so this also prohibits me from taxin the car aswell. What do you think i should do?

Call a garage to tow them?We all evolve - get on with it0

Do you mean you have no driving licence or are you just not insured etc?0

The cars are insured and i do have a licence, But im not sure i can afford to have any work done if the car does not pass the MOT test. This is my main concern, so ideally id like to drive the car straight to my garage untill i have the money to MOT, Tax and repair any possible faults. What you think?0

I think this is possibly bending the rules, but would it be worth the MOT fee to put them through the test and so have a rough estimate of the work required?
If so, you could book an MOT and drive a car there. When it fails you could drive it back to yours.0 -
1, Only you know the risks of getting "pulled over" driving those 10mins, I would suggest that risk is minimal.
2, If you are worried regarding costs of failing then make sure you test all the easy things (lights, wipers, washers etc..) first and take the car to a test centre that does not carry out repairs, they have less motivation to recommend such work.0 -
As far as i am aware it is impossible to tax it until it is MOT'd?0

That is not correct, you can drive to and from the prebooked test.0 -
Therefore the answer is: get some temporary insurance cover online (google is your friend), book your MOT(s), take cars to MOT centre, if they pass great go and tax them with your new MOT certificate and the temporary insurance cover note you printed off, if not drive them to your garage.

Thanks for the correction, you're quite right.
This is from the DVLA's website:Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.
This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.
Note, that it says "as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place". I personally wouldn't be happy unless I'd told my insurer the car doesn't have an MOT certificate and got their assurance that I'm still covered.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0
