I think a lot of people will identify with your feelings. It seems as if you have lived your life around your family and have forgotten how to become a person in your own right. To change things will need a change in attitude, where you stop thinking you are X's wife, or Y's Mum. Unfortunately friends don't just coming knocking on your door. You have to go out, meet people and find them though joining an Adult Learning Class, a dance or yoga class, writing class, or some kind of volunteering.

Look in your local library to find out what activities are happening locally. If you are over 50 and only working part-time, check out if there's a U3A group in your local area. They have monthly meetings and all kinds of common interest groups such as walking, outings, discussion groups, family history groups, etc. The National Trust also have social groups around the country if that kind of thing is of interest to you.

It takes an act of courage to cast your bread upon the water and nothing happens instantly, but over time you will get to know more people. Is there a local Womens Institute, Townswomens Guild near you? Or you could be really brave and start up a new group in your locality for a weekly walk followed by a cup of coffee or something similar. There are probably lots of people around in a similar position to you. Advertise in your local parish magazine or local newspaper and see what response you get.

OP posted last on 3rd of this month and hasn't responded further as far as I can see. ...unless she has opted for the Vitamin D option proposed by newbie hcurrier.
Getting a bit hacked off with one off requests for support. Or maybe I'm just having a bad day???
  • To be fair to the OP, she didn't really request support, she just offloaded something which she obviously needed to get off her chest. Maybe she's been ill since then, or doing something about it all, or not able to post for some reason. Maybe she didn't really expect all these replies, as she seemed to feel pretty insignificant, so thought no-one would pay her any attention. I hope you are just having a bad day! ;)
