I tried to reclaim from my bank for account charges and they said no. Went to the ombudsman and they said no because it been over three years since I closed the account. I didn't know at the time that I could claim. seems very unfair. Is there any way round this?0

No, there's not.
Did you have a reason for complaint?0 -

Unfortunately the finance "rules" say that you have 3 years from the point at which you knew there was a reason for complaint in order to complain else it can be time barred. Closing the account is considered a reason, the only get out would be if it was less than 6 years since you bought the accountSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

The banks won the court case over unfair charges in 2009. So, after that date, they no longer had to consider complaints about unfair bank charges. The FOS does not either.
However, they do still have to consider current financial hardship cases and incorrect application of charges. But as your account is closed and has been for some years, they do not have co consider these with you.I didn't know at the time that I could claim. seems very unfair. Is there any way round this?
It wouldnt have made any difference if you did know 3 years ago as it was still too late by then. Also, you are not claiming. You are making a complaint. You can complain about whatever you want, when you want but there are timescales in law that limit the time you can do it.
So, its not unfair. You just made incorrect assumptions.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. This page is for bank CHARGES not the monthly fee accounts. This post is thus confusing as it sounds like you got back charges rather than the Additions feeSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

Heard from Naturist. Just had my account credited with £2000. For advantage gold fees and also refunds on loans that I didn't get better rates for. Account was sold after I was diagnosed with kidney disease, so never covered on travel insurance. Took four and a half weeks, but worth the wait0

Hi there, Just wanted to say a massive thank you to you and your site.
I finally decided to 'give it a go' and see if I could reclaim any money for my packaged account (bearing in mind that I actually used the breakdown cover earlier this year.)
I red through your guides and, sceptically, completed your online form, deleting the relevant parts etc.
This was sent off on Monday this week. Today, Friday, they called me to discuss my case at midday. They asked a couple of questions, noted which elements of cover I have or haven't used etc and...4.30 PM today I had another call to say that they would be paying me for not only the account costs but also the interest....£3048!!!
I am so so happy and I just wanted to let you know.
Anyone else thinking of doing it, what is the worst that can happen? Just fill the form in and send it off!!0
