Report Bank Charges successes and failures

If memory serves correct, it was a student account that gave me a £1,500 overdraft facility with no fees for spending any of that £1,500. In the last few years, they moved the goalposts so that only the first £500 was charge-free. Like I said, this is from memory - my post is meant to be taken more anecdotally than anything else.
This is the whole point. I've struggled for some time to get out of my Overdraft - my salary clears it down temporarily before my usual direct debits fill it back up again. I didn't feel i had the option to move account and felt trapped. Anyway, I feel it was a nice gesture from the bank and hope my story helps someone else reading this.
Well done! That's a great achievement.
I can understand you've struggled, please don't worry about what certain people say on this forum, lots of people will judge you and probably haven't been in your circumstances.
Well done again, it's really good you've been able to take control.

Success v NatWest (RBS):
I emailed a complaint to NatWest (customer.relations@natwest.com), some 6 weeks ago, as I was transferred to their Advantage Gold Account in 2007; but, wasn't informed that there was a monthly fee and was also informed that this was the only way my overdraft could be increased. I was also informed in 2012 - when I requested to close my account - that I would have to repay my overdraft asap if I changed the account and so that's the only reason I left my complaint until now. I did not use any of the benefits that came with this packaged account.
Today - after receiving 4 holding letters - I received a letter detailing the compensation:
£1,203.86 in fees
£ 354.58 in interest @ 8%
(less tax @ 20%)
£ 30.00 for the delay and to give me time to change the account if I wish to do so.
Many thanks MSE and to other claimants:
please don't give up!!!Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -
After reading about the recent case in the county court I decided to try and reclaim my bank charges from hsbc.I wrote a personalised letter to hsbc last week to say how bank charges had affected our family when my partner lost his job. These charges were from 2009 to 2010. I had a call early this week and was offered approx 75 percent of the charges back , which I have gladly accepted! I am still surprised how quickly and efficiently this was dealt with.Well to give credit where it's due pardon the pun...top marks to hsbc customer care team.i urge you all to do the same and get writing those letters.0

I sent mine in August and I still don't have a response in respect of the complaint, just a letter saying they'll look into it!custardchris wrote: »Bank: Lloyds

I wrote to them last week using the template letter to reclaim charges dating back to 2011 and 2012, and interest, and they refunded all the charges from 2012 minus interest. Can't fault it really, as I didn't think I'd get anything.
Cheers!:beer:0 -
Have just spoken to Lloyds.
I sent a complaint in last night detailing the charges and the hardship, had a text message this morning to contact a complaint handler. I have now spoken to him and he has explained that they are happy to assess hardship but will NOT pay any statutory interest claimed. He is calling me back tomorrow. I will keep you posted.0 -
Well...
Bank: Lloyds
Amount claimed: £999
What they paid: £1119
I claimed £999 plus interest. They actually paid £1119 back as it appears I'd miscalculated.
I am actually gobsmacked and over the moon!0 -
Wow.
So I still don't understand how some people are successful at claiming back historical charges are and some aren't.0 -
Can I just say a huge thanks to the advice given on this site. My claim was from 1997 and I was not very optimistic at first. I located my account number from an old student loan application (I closed the account 15 years ago) and used the template provided by yourselves. Two reams of statements, etc arrived and I ploughed through them and there it was my loan statement. I sent it off and yesterday received a cheque for £1,617... I can now afford to go to my son's wedding in Italy next year :j Thank you so so much :A0

Varies based on how generous the bank is, current financial hardship etc - no-one will get back all their fees etc as the banks won the case on "unfair" chargesSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
