I'd just like to thank everyone for their interest and help.

I'd hate to have to switch back to IE whenever I'm using email or start wholesale uninstalls and re-installs of programmes but I may have to bite the bullet.

A solution.

Have discovered that it is possible to highlight, click and drag between the print fields on the two screens. Thank god for that. Panic over.

Funnily enough, I've just had a similar problem; I had an e-mail open (in Hotmail) and wanted to copy a section of text to a new e-mail. So I hit ctrl+C, opened a new e-mail, hit ctrl+v and nothing happened
To try a workaround, I opened MS Word, and hit ctrl+v which as expected, inserted the text, and from there I used ctrl+C & ctrl+V to copy and paste it back into Hotmail. Success! ...strange
