Ok so I bought my domain name from 123reg for £5.99 for two years, which I am very happy with.

However at the moment I am running a website using Moonfruits free service. This was the first attempt at putting a site together and really just to try and get my image, logo and content sorted, which still isn't complete.

I don't need masses of space as the website is small and not very complex, but I do need full access and rights to change content etc.

I heard about fasthost and they seem good price - think it was about £50 for a year.

    Can anyone offer some advice/recommendations.

I am struggling on making a decision as I am not up to scrath with all the terminology they use so do not know what I am comparing!

    Thanks
Is it going to be a business website, or just something personal. If it's for business, one company I'd immediately point you to is Cyberprog new media. It's perfectly suited and priced cheaply enough for website hosting. I've spoke with the Domain Admin on another forum I use and he's very friendly

Anyway, if it's a personal website, you can host the website on your home PC (providing you are willing to leave it switched on)... you do run into legality of this with your ISP so check this bit out first <<<< a lot don't allow it.

If you can you use use MySQL, Apache, and PHP and you're set.

If you want to go down hosting routes, have a look on webhostingtalk.com

There's plenty of people offering services there in the UK and plenty have reviews about them

    I can't lol!

The only thing I've ever used was Moonfruit and it's literally a page with the icons around it - just like word or publisher etc.

    I keep looking at Easyhost.

I am confused about the domain name. I bought my name straight away as the others i wanted were gone and this was the next closest choice and didn't want to lose it - this was only like 2 weeks ago. I thought you just entered this information on your hosting site and that was that, but I keep reading about transfers?! Does that mean I will pay the hosting site and it will be cancelled with 123reg?

    thank you

Damn it, I typed a reply but laptop went awol on me :(

When you buy a hosting package, the company you buy it from also registers the domain and hosts it for you to make your life easier.

As you bought the website, the relevant domain host would need to "Transfer" it to their servers. Basically they need to have the domain and files from somebody elses servers to their servers. Some day it for free, most charge a slight admin fee of around £10.

Apache, MySQL, PHP aren't that hard. Technical side of them I can program and configure easy, I couldn't write a single bit in them yet because I haven't studied it but I'm learning quickly. My website is running on an apache webserver with a MySQL database and PHP scripts. I manage it all and I'm happy, although I am going to look at optimising my Apache client.

Anyway, you could try using Joomla, it's supposed to be quite a good content management system for designing webpages. Or, if you go with a host most usually come with some form of WYSIWYG editing software

Ok so I have been talking to a friend who runs a very good website and she's been trying to help me with the terminology lol.

I've been looking at Easyhosting again and for £12 a year they offer a starter site.

My only question I have now is about name servers. Easyhost give me an option to update the name servers on my domain site. Presumably then I can change the DNS on the domain site to point to the host?

    Am I understanding this correctly??

Yes just change the nameservers to where easy host tell you to point them to. Will normally take 12-24 hours to take effect.

Dont bother hosting your own website unless you know what you are doing, and if you know what you are doing the website is likely to have enough traffic to make home hosting a waste of time.

Its expensive (pc on all the time), opens you up to attacks unless your pc is secured properly, very slow, as you are sharing your home broad band with anyone that wants to use your site, probably against the t&c of most reputable ISP's, and not worth the effort to learn the skills required to do so, unless you have some burning need to learn the skills.

Just get a cheap host like godaddy or something, stick up your site, and let them do all the maintaining of the server, and electric payments, security etc.

If your site becomes very popular, then you will need to get better hosting, but for a simple homesite, that wont get many visitors, stick with a cheap hosting plan.

Do not buy hosting from any of the small, unheard of firms, many of them are kids who buy unlimited hosting reseller accounts on ebay, and go bust when they get shut down.
Stick with a big company that you know is not going anywhere in a hurry.

Agree with everything bar this, everyone starts somewhere. Yes, most are kiddies who think they know everything but aren't prepared to spend the time, money or effort into doing research they just want to make a quick buck.

I myself am putting around £15,000 into startup of my business, it will be a new company but I know the dedication I'll need to do it and succeed. Reseller accounts are generally from those who need to start off somewhere

All I'm saying is don't rule out companies because you haven't heard of them, doing research on sites like webhostingtalk.com will allow you find out more about them

For hosters I'm always up for helping out people, hence my link in earlier post. I've spoke to the person for advice who owns the company so I know he is a good person. The packages are suitably priced and they have been established for a while.

Thanks everyone for you help and advice. I've gone with Easyhosting and their starter package - need to spend some time learning all this, so figured that was a way in without losing anything.

Now I have a new thread lol!
  • Googling any potential hosts with additional keywords like "review" and "dispute" is always a good idea to check out any host before you commit.

I use 3ix for my websites, they are ok in terms of uptime and support but the best part is they have a really good package at less than £1 a month (It's in dollars but converts to about £0.70 pcm).

And doing a search on companies house to see if they are actually a registered company, and not some fly by night, illegal operation also tells you how safe it will be to use them....

Can you find cyberprog new media on companies house?

Another thing to do, is to look for the registered company details on the hosting companies website, a legal requirement for registered companies, again, can you find them on cyberprog new media's website? I cant.......
