Arnold Clark
Hi
I just bought a new car from Arnold Clark on the scrappage scheme. I did it last month because my tax disc was up on the 31st of January.
When I put the deposit down for the car I asked if I could take the car in straight away because the tax disc was running out on the 31st. Was told that this would be ok. So took a day off work getting the car fit for the drive. Then another day off with a friend (also taking the day off) to drive the car up the road. Phoned Arnold Clark in the morning to tell them when we would be arriving. Only then to be told that we couldn't take the car in and would have to wait until our new car was ready in about 2 months.
I almost erupted straight away. I had 3 different conversations with them the week previous discussing where to drop off the car. Now they were saying that these conversations had not happened. Phoned the complaints department at Arnold Clark and they said that they were only a queries department and could not deal with anything that was not in writing. I told them to go and look at their website!
So now I have to declare the car as SORN and hire a trailer to tow the vehicle up the road.
So I probably don't have a leg to stand on because it is not in writing. All calls are supposed to be recorded but I guess this is not the case for complaints.
Any suggestions?

Arnold Clark are all about turnover and bulk. There is no way they would want an old banger sitting about taking up space for 2 months. Furthermore they wouldnt want to scrap it until the deal was completed.
Tbh sounds like a salesman told a lie to secure a sale. I am afraid you cant make them take it now, and won't hence you need to sorn it.0 -
Will they accept it for the scappage on the back of a trailer? I thought scappage cars had to be "still on the road" so to speak?
I could be wrong.0 -

It has to be taxed, insured and MOT'd at the time of the deal being made. I would be very careful here OP as it may be Arnold Clark arent classing this as until the time your new car is ready and you collect it.0

You are.:D0 -
Why do you have 2 threads going on the same subject, i have just answered on your other thread - confused.
this is my reply there.
Why would you need to take a whole day off to get the car ready for a drive just up the road, surely all you would need to do was get in and turn the key. Scrappage just means they would scrap the car so no need to clean it.
Why another day just to drive the car up the road.
Ask them (in writing) to come and collect the car from your driveway when the time comes, it is, after all just up the road, and they would be able to do this on tradeplates.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
If you have done the deal (in writing) they are not going to renege on it now. (they want your cash). There is no spare land in or around AC's places, he is much to astute to waste cash on that.
Book you car in for an MOT on the day of the new car handover and you'll be fine to drive it there, but what are you doing without a car for two months?0 -
Hmm, it's a wreck, isn't it?
I can see this is an unusual request for them. Usually people want to keep their old car, as a means of transport until the new one arrives. Instead you expect the dealer to take your heap of (s)crap and keep it on their premises until your new one arrives (I'm guessing that they can't scrap it until you sign for delivery of the new one, or they won't get their govt grant).
Frankly, If I was the dealer, I wouldn't take it in early, what if dozens of folk tried to do the same thing?
Ok, you say someone told you that you could take it in early. Then ask Clarks to track down their recording of that phone call, and then comment.
But I think you'll just end up having to SORN it.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
it does feel as though i have been given the story to get the sale through. it really does my head in how we live in a world where nothing can be done unless it is written on paper of caught on camera! i have registered the car sorn and the mot does not run out until august so that is fine. they have copies of all the relevant documents.
you live an learn however and i will know not to use arnold clark in future.
mckneff - i posted the subject twice because i am new to the forum and was unsure where to put the post. i never said the car was up JUST up the road, i said it was up the road. which is 50miles away. i spent yesterday fixing the sump and tyres so the car was fit for the journey.
we still have the work car so we are not totally without one for 2 months.
i agree that if i was the dealer i probably wouldn't take the car until day of delivery either. that is why we asked 3 times if it was ok! it serves me right for going to a large company instead of keeping it local. unfortunately they were the closest to hand with the car we wanted.0
