    You are worrying too much!

    Let them all fall into the wall and fill the holes. Wet the the inside of the holes a little (do not soak them) to help the polyfilla stick. Some may fall in, but enough will stick.

    Once the first lot sticks, let it dry then put on more till the holes are all filled. Leave it very slightly proud and sand carefully when completely dry.

    It the finished result is not 100%, hang a large picture over it!
