The only family i have here really are my brother and sister, i dont see loads of them but would miss them lots of course..other than them and a handful of friends

But what about your other daughter who doesn't live with you, does she not count at all?

as i find it totally miserable living here

or am i stuck in this miserable place forever?!!

Ditto, I would move abroad tomorrow, I have family, but they are grown up. OH makes the right noises in agreeing, but I know he will never do it.
He is a creature of habit, no motovation, goes to work, stops off for a pint, comes home, slouches on the sofa, snores his !!!!!!! head off, then goes to bed, I want more before I am too old and the chance passes me by.

I want to move so badly, and hubby does not want to make a move till he retires, and by then any thing could have happened, so I either wait and be unhappy, or I go on my own lol

Whatever you decide to do, really think about the pros and cons, do all yopur homework on that country, look on the web for an ex-pats site for that country and speak to people who have moved there.

Yes... and he dumped me the day that I arrived...

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

I think you should look into it more, what is stopping you from saving up, going and trying. I want to go to Canada which I think is difficult but my husband is a tradesman and there are certain parts of Canada that they are short of tradesman. If you want to wait a couple of years, would you consider re-training in a skill shortage of your chosen country.

You only get one chance at life you should go for it.

You really need to look into this very carefully. I am moving to the US in six weeks, it's a stressful process and even though our circumstances have made it easier, it has still been a long and drawn-out process. Nothing happens overnight. I have phases of extreme positivity, and other times of real, sad, 'why am I doing this?'. I'm excited, but I can also burst into tears at the slightest thing.

I think it's probably easier on the person with the job offer, they know how their time will be filled, and in my OH's case, knows lots of people and is already familiar with the environment. I don't have that and it's incredibly daunting. I'm having to walk away from my own career plans and try and start again - don't underestimate how difficult that is. I have no idea what I'll be doing six months from now, which is incredibly unsettling.

We'd often talked idly about moving abroad, but TBH, I'd never really thought we'd do it. But sometimes life throws you an opportunity and I think we'd regret not trying it out. But that knowledge does not take away from the stress of it all - I sometimes wonder what we used to talk about before all of this came along. There is a huge amount to organise and think about - I have endless lists of things to do - not sure if I have any chance of actually getting through them!

I am almost certain Brits are not eligible to enter the Green Card lottery, they certainly haven't been the years OH has applied (non UK passport holder) and I haven't been able to. It's all about cultural diversity and there are too many Brits over there already to make us culturally diverse!.

    .
True..those who are English/Welsh/Scottish cannot apply for Green card lottery but Irish citizens can. I wonder why as there must be plenty of Irish people in the USA?

Incidentally, you dont have to be born in Ireland to become an irish citizen.

OZ> for those seeking to enter under the skills/occupation criteria,,,,,must be under 45 years old.

I think a lot of people think about this after holidays. Holidays are fine but they can breed discontent. The grass is always greener.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

There's a site called Poms in Oz that is a good read for people contemplating a move to Australia. Lots of helpful info.

I first left Britain when I was in primary school. It's taken me a long while - over 30 years - , and a few false starts, for a few months here and there, to get back here permanently. Every day, at some point in the day (it creeps up on me) I think "home at last, thank goodness!" The haar, D&B, twilight, Skye, underground power cables (wonderful; I couldn't care less about holes in the road), the markets, the jumble sales, car boot sales, church fairs, the beautiful, sunny COLD weather, (Edinburgh isn't into real rain and neither am I), Sainsburys (not into Tesco or Asda) and Lidl, parks with flying foxes of the playground variety, foxes that treat the place like they own it, squirrels the same. Green like the tropics, without the horrible weather. It's GREAT to be home.

How about moving, but to somewhere else in the UK? I'm a Londoner, and fully intended to live there, but it's got bad air pollution, is nowhere near the sea, and has rainy grey days that I found depressing. Edinburgh tries to do "grey days" every now and then, but isn't very good at it, and usually gives up and lets the sun shine through after a couple of hours of half hearted effort. If we hadn't found what we were looking for on the mainland, we would probably have moved to somewhere like the Channel Islands.

I've lived in the States, Australia and NZ. They're all completely different to here; sometimes I am even amazed they have a language in common with us. It is fun living overseas. And we earned a lot more than we have earned here since coming back. Coming home to a low wage economy has been unexpected. But Britain is such a comfortable place to live. I had the most melt in your mouth piece of cod tonight. It was de-li-cious.
