Pets are covered under the sale of goods act so the retailer HAS to prove that the snake didnt die from anything but negligence on your friends behalf which he wont be able to and will there fore have to supple a replacement or refund (he gets to choose). I wouldnt bother with the autopsy as if the shop wants one doing, they need to do it themselves. Speak to consumer direct for further advice.

It will all depend on what the autopsy says (i didnt even know there was such thing lol). If it confirms the animal was ill when purchased your friend may have recourse. If it died to shock of the move, there will probably be nothing that can be done.

I bought a guinea big that died within 3 days. They refunded me my money, putting it though the till as "Faulty/Damaged"!!:rotfl:

What snake costs £500? or set up for that matter?
I'm not sure that the Sale of Goods act would apply to livestock. I would expect an element of risk when buying an animal that something could go wrong at any point.
If he's getting an autopsy done, then it would probably depend what it revealed, and if the seller was likely to have known.
    Would probably need specialist advice.

Edit - apparently the Sale of Goods act does apply. Click here for more information

SOGA DOES include pets. As i said, it will be up to the shop to prove how the snake died by paying for an autopsy themselves, not the OP's friend. If they cannot prove it was the friends fault then recourse is due. Nothing hard about it, just depends on the autopsy result provided by the retailer.

  • I used to run a reptile shop. What type of snake was it and can you describe the housing bought. Also what diet was it on and did it feed while your friend had it?
