Something similar happened to my brother last year at my local Wetherspoons - he was a veggie and was given a lamb burger instead of the veggie burger he ordered. Only realised after taking a bite! All W's did was apologise and replace meal, certainly no reply to the follow-up letter I sent!

Such mistakes are, IMHO, unacceptable. What if the OP's veggie burger with hidden bacon had been mistakenly presented to a Jewish diner? Or indeed, if a Muslim customer did as my brother did and unwittingly took a bite out of a non-Halal burger?

Well that would be extremely unpleasant but it wouldn't kill anyone. I don't see the religious grounds as being any more or less valid than vegetarianism by the way - some people object to eating meat on moral grounds, for example.

However, you do have to say that in that light they are unsuitable for anyone with a food allergy. On the other hand if you dig deep enough, would you end up finding mistakes like this being made everywhere?

I agree for a vegie to get chicken or like you a slice of bacon is wrong and shouldn't really happen but you laughed it off and reacted like a normal person, my friend acted like she was going to shrivel up and die there and then because she'd had a bite of chicken.

Although a meat eater myself, for someone who has been a devout vegetarian their entire life I can see why they may react more than just "laugh it off like a "normal" person".
  • I was given a chicken burger instead of a veggie burger last time I was in Wetherspoon's, but to be fair that was probably a genuine mistake - finding a slice of bacon in a veggie burger sounds like someone put it there out of deliberate malice (unless they're very stupid) - I would definitely be angry if no one replied to a complaint.

To be fair I can understand a hardcore veggie getting annoyed - I'm not vegetarian for moral reasons, but because the thought of eating meat makes me feel physically sick (I think I have some sort of phobia!) and biting into a piece of bacon or chicken when I was expecting a nice veggie meal would give me a horrible shock.

I didn't mean that the way it sounds or clearly the way it came across. I can see why people would be unhappy but there's different ways people could react. The point I was trying to make is my friend went way over the top with her reaction but the OP acted in a proper way and didn't make a mountain out of a mole hill. Either way it didn't change what happened.

  • It is indeed wrong, but on the other hand nobodies dead are they? except of course for poor little porky pig :D
and for the record I am a non practicing vegatarian.
Joking aside though I can appreciate why a proper / devout veggington would take offense at it. I despise prawns with venomous passion and would be quite miffed if my big fat juicy steak was served up with said crustaceons on top.
Also carrots have feelings too ;)
the other problem is as it's weatherspoons (or any similar establishment)do you really want to complain and send your food back where it's out of sight for 5-10 minutes?
    eewwww
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

That is the level of service be expected from minimum wage, non English speaking, immigrant staff.
  • I would be mad, as even if you gave the bacon to your friend some animal fat etc remains in your burger and that is a big no no with vegans which is why the staff should be given a right ticking off.

i dont eat meat as have a serious meat allergy - i have had anaphalaxis due to being given medication, while under aneasetic, that contained porcine products - even though i had explained my problem to both the surgeon and the aneathisist and the drug they administered was the actual example i gave as a product i was allergic to!!
so yes it could kill me!!

Because all the British people on minimum wage always give world class service?
