Ignore everyone who says that you can just knock up pastry and it's the easiest thing ever - for every poster like that there's half a dozen other people posting about pastry failures!

Certainly no-one I know makes puff pastry and it's taken me years to get other sorts of pastry cracked - I think pastry is one of the surest tests of a cook!

As for using it, if it's puff pastry, roll it out into a rectangle, score a little margin about 1-2 cms wide (don't go the whole way through the pastry , you just want to mark out a rectangle within a rectangle IYSWIM) and then pop on whatever you fancy. Sliced apples are nice, and you can glaze with an apricot jab as well. As for savory toppings, I caramelise some onions on a pan, spread them over the top of the pastry and then add some blue cheese and walnuts.

i buy the ready made stuff and use the 'puff' to make corned beef plait..
dice an onion and fry till cooked add in a tin corned beef chopped into small dice and a diced large potato(i cook the potato first in microwave like a jacket spud..then peel and chop ) add seasoning plus i add chili to mine..(well i put chili in everthing!!)..roll the pastry fairly thin then place a long mound(think Ayres rock)down the middle cut pastry and fold over to make a plait(can't work out how to describe the cutting/plaiting technique so am presuming everyone knows how)brush with eggwash cook in mediun oven till hot and browned ...great hot or cold...

    Hi hmc,

I make my own shortcrust pastry because it's cheaper to do so. It does the job, but it leaves a lot to be desired as I don't think it's nearly as nice as my MIL's or the shop bought stuff. Apparently my hands aren't cold enough. :D I tried making my own puff pastry once and it was fabulous, but really not worth the effort on a regular basis....so I'm afraid I buy it now.

This thread should give you lots of ideas for using puff pastry:

I'll add your thread to it later to keep the ideas together.

Dont mean to be rude but in the time it took you to buy the frozen pastry
you could have put some flour, lard and water in a bow and mixed it yourself.

Not very mse, you little tinker.;)

But, i have to admit I only make shortcrust pastry.

Cant be bothered with all this turning stuff so now i am ashamed to have to admit i buy frozen puff pastry.:o (its much nicer anyway) lol

    Huh?! :rotfl:

No shame in buying pre made pastry. People have to do what they can within their limits. Maybe the op doesn't know how to make pastry? It is one of those things that is renownedly scary to make yourself.

I know exactly which advertisement you are talking about - their recipe is here :D or you can download ithere on pdf
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I don't know anyone who makes their own puff pastry, it's far too much of a faff! No shame in buying it at all.
Quite true, I buy puff pastry. I'm assuming that's what the OP has bought because that's what you see on telly.

I just score a line with a knife about 2cm from the edge then cover the area inside the line with lovely stuff.

This week I spred it with slow-cooked onions and topped with goat's cheese.

Another favourite is to spread a bit of crème fraîche and then a bit of Dijon mustard. Then scatter some blue cheese and top with bits of ham.

Pest, tomatoes, olives and mozzarella is a good combo too.

Really the possibilities are endless but I'd always put some sort of cheese on.

I remember when at school :rotfl:we used to make these things that I think were called 'Jalouise', basically a puff pastry casing with anything inside it! Have a raid of the cupboards and see what you can find. Tuna and sweetcorn bound by a little white sauce. Leftover ham/ bacon with mushrooms and tomatoes. Brocolli and chicken and so on.

Basically take the pastry and roll it out on a flour dusted board. I would suggest cutting it in half and using half for another dish (more suggestions to follow!:o) Create your filling (if the filling is warm allow to cool before putting on top of the pastry to prevent sogginess!) Put the filling in the middle of the pastry and brushing the edges with beaten egg bring the edges to the middle then bring together. Then bring the ends together as best you can, again brushing with egg and pinching. Then brush the remaining egg over the pastry for colour and put in the oven until golden.

With the other half you could wrap a salmon fillet in pastry and again using eggs to bind and golden as a kind of salmon en croute, (about 20 mins in the oven should ensure golden pastry and cooked fish) serve with brocolli etc. Or alternatively you could cut out circles using a biscuit cutter and make a little tomato base and top with any pizza toppings you and your little one like and grate cheese on (pizza style as suggested previously) Yummy yummy in the tummy!:)
