Total Fitness - Cancelling my contract!

Good afternoon everyone,
I have searched around on the site and read a few problem/help/advice about Total Fitness contracts but some of the advice/suggestions have me a bit confused and i have read my contract and i'm not sure which is the best/proper way to cancel it.
I signed a 12 month contract 16/01/07 but now i need to cancel the contract.
Under my signed Membership Pointers, pointer 2 states: If a member wishes to terminate their membership at any time after completion of twelve months, they must do so in writing and give one calander months notice. If notice of cancellation is not received membership will continue on the same terms.
So i think i can just give them a months notice in writing and that should be it?
If this is correct then who do i write to, the gym i visit or the main Total Fitness Office? And what do i need to put in the letter?
Thank you for any help and i apologise if, this is in the wrong place or this has been fully explained elsewhere!!

I just checked the TF website and they seem to have changed the conditions as they now state:. Unless the Member, four weeks before expiration of the current membership, gives the Company written registered notice terminating the same the Member agrees that Membership shall automatically continue for a further year on the same terms as herein stated save that the payment due shall be the then ruling Membership Rate.
Now i'm more confused! Do i take the conditions from what i signed or do i take it these are now the conditions? And if these are the new conditions then i am tied into the contract for another year? I cant afford to keep it going for another year!!0 -
The contract you signed is the one that is in force. If they change their t&c then it will only affect NEW customers who sign up to those t&c.0

Why not write to both to be on the safe side? Do it by recorded delivery though.
Make sure that you stop paying them. If you pay by DD or standing order, contact your bank and cancel the arrangement. If it's a credit card mandate (ugh!), call the card company and report the card lost. You will get a replacement with a different card number. In theory, in these circumstances, the payee can insist that the card company continues to honour the mandate, but it's not very likely that they will do this, particularly if you have good reason to dispute that the payments are due.Je suis Charlie.0 -
If you signed up January 2007, then you've been a member for 3 years. Have you signed anything since signing up initially? If not, then just give them 1 (full) months notice (i.e. if you pay on 16th of the month, then you'll need to give notice until 16th March now), and you MUST send it recorded delivery (otherwise it will not arrive...!).Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

If you contact the payee and say that you have cancelled the "continuous card authority", preferably via recorded delivery, then they are committing fraud if they continue to debit the card, irrespective of whether monies are owed or not. Reporting the card lost is however a good "belt and braces" measure.0 -
A neighbour of mine works in membership at a big health club chain. She cheerfully admits that they do all they can to make it as hard as possible for a person to leave - even if their contract says they can
I would echo other posters and make sure you send your cancellation by recorded delivery, otherwise it will get "lost":mad:0 -
Thank you everyone who responded! As i haven't signed any other contract than the original I will be putting a cancellation letter togther tonight and it will be handed in to the local gym and one sent, recorded delivery, to the main office and i will be putting in a reminder in my moby, my laptop, my ipod and my outlook in work to cancel the DD on the date specified!
Thanks again to you all!!:T
Have a good one!0 -

Simply reporting the card lost is also infinitely easier than bringing a fraud case and trying to get your money back after the event!Je suis Charlie.0 -

To the Manager,
Due to personal circumstances I will need to cancel my membership.
So I am providing you, in writing, four weeks notice to cancel my membership with YOUR LEISURE CLUB with effect from 05/02/2010.
Any associated charges will no longer be accepted by my bank after 06/02/2010.
