getting a macbook

Quite often when it gets closer to, or into, September - they do brilliant deals on buying an ibook and ipod together. That's how i got mine and it meant i got the ipod for next to nothing. I went through the NUS website after I'd registered at uni and got my NUS number - you then register to the NUS website and you can go trhough a link through them. :T0

Have I mentioned how awesome they are?
BUY ONE NOW
go to https://www.cancomuk.com for a nice little sleeve case for it (i went for a microfibre one by tucano, it is awesome, and comes with a protective cloth for the keyboard, although I use it to clean the macbook case too

I have to agree with Ian - I bought an iBook G4 and I totally love it. It takes a bit of getting used to the differences in the programmes but it's great once you get used to it. My iBook is really small and easily fits into my Uni rucksack along with my books and everything else! Plus I have wireless fitted so I can sit in the wireless zones around uni and use it - perfect as then you don't have to worry about getting on a fixed PC in the computer rooms. Hoorah!

I was thinking of getting a laptop for Uni, but have now looked at these and they seem pretty swish :j But one beginners question - will I be able to transfer the work I do on the Uni computers to mine with a USB flash device etc?0

Yup, no problem transferring between PC and the Macs. If you wish, you can buy Microsoft Office for Mac (which looks much nicer than the PC version, for some reason, better designed) or use Open Office (FREE).
If you've not used a Mac before, I recommend you try before you buy. The Apple stores (London and Birmingham) are designed so that you can be there for hours trying it out before you buy one.
Just had a look and they haven't started the ipod promo yet for unis here but it seems to have already started for the US (where they start uni earlier).0 -
oh yeah, no problemrobgriz wrote:I was thinking of getting a laptop for Uni, but have now looked at these and they seem pretty swish :j But one beginners question - will I be able to transfer the work I do on the Uni computers to mine with a USB flash device etc?
you can even plug in any mouse it'll work on the mac
also, for every single printer I've come across, simple plugging in the USB cable installs the software - you don't need to do anything (all the drivers are preloaded)
It's a bit of a learning curve to start with (slightly different user interface to Windows) but stick with it - it's worth it
Watch the video tutorials at lynda.com (you can get it off bitttorrent if you want) or vtc.com - so much easier than reading boring manuals!!0 -
basically just using windows on a mac is the same as having any other laptop, you dont have to use macosx if you dont want to, however that would be a shame as osx is far superior to windows!
i now have a program called second copy on my mac and pc (windows) and then everytime the macbook is in the house network (wireless) upon turning on and off, the files synchronise automatically (it adds to the closedown time admittedly) but saves any hassle with usb sticks.
for info on mac osx visit the apple website; https://www.apple.com/macosx
it tells you about everything you need to know, it really is awesome (instant searching facility etc), well watch the videos on the apple website as well, they are quite funny, but explain the advantages of osx.
osx is able to automatically find and connect with most usb devices without the need for drivers, i.e. latest cameras etc work without the need for drivers.
garageband, iphoto, photobooth (esp with the built in isight in the macbook) are all awesome apps
i am / was a mac noob a few months ago, it really is that easy to get used to. my only advice is to get a decent 2button mouse, wired or wireless

they have a free ipod nano offer in america, but i would find it strange if they gave one to us in the UK for free as well. as to be honest the price is superb!
