getting a macbook

Hi,
I just wanted to ask, I am saving to buy an Apple MacBook. I am 16 and will be starting in college this September.
However, what I wanted to know was about the education area of the apple website. I can get onto it by saying I am linked to my college and have seen the prices there. However, I wanted to see if anyone knows if the prices on that part of the website are different to the ones that are found by clicking on the link that is only accessible from my "institution's network".
I just want to know because I need to know how much money to save etc and I can't have a look because I won't be using the computer at college until September.
Phil

I know they give discount on all apple goods and software. I didnt really checkout the prices that way when i got my ibook, i telephoned apple and asked them direct over the phone. I think a phone call is the best bet. But make sure they dont talk you into buying unesasarys. Mac care is very good, and if you can afford it, buy it as mac repair centres are not common.0

Hi Phil, below are 3 comparisons. top picture shows discounted price through NUS (your college should be able to issues you an NUS card). the bottom picture shows the regular retail prices.

It's easy - just ring up the education department, place the order by debit card say you are a student at Leeds University (or wherever).
They ship the order out, charge the student rate and don't ask questions.
I've done it 3 times (but in each case I was actually a student at that university)
go to https://www.apple.com/ukstore and click on 'education' (top right?)0 -
Yeah you need to say you are a student at a certain university, and they may ask you what course you study at,
You will get it at the student rate (£643) the upgrades are all reduced as well, the RAM upgrade to 1Gb cost about £59 which is pretty cheap IMHO if you don't want the hassle of upgrading, and I would advise you get 1Gb of Ram whatever you want. Talking to someone is easiet alhough they will try to sell more extras to you, but as i said the 1Gb of RAm is worth it, as the graphics card uses up some of the memory (64mb).
The Macbook is awesome, I waited for mine to come for so long, and it is sweet :P One thing you can do now (i dont know whether you know or not) is that you can run windows normally on the macbook, so anything you need to run on windows apps you can :P Using a program called boot-camp (it only works on intel macs tho).
It is the cheapest dual core notebook i have found and it is sweet as
Also by buying from the student HE store you get 3 years international warranty!!! - so you dont need the apple care stuff, as all the apple care stuff is give you longer access to telephone support!
Cheers

You want to use parallels workstation - let's you run windows from within mac os x.0 -
Thanks for your advice everyone. Looks like I might be able to get one quicker with that sort of discount! My brother has an NUS card at the moment and then I will get one in september hopefully

The problem with parallels is that it isnt as quick for using windows and osx, as it steals the resources, altho it is pretty cool to be able to change OS with the tap of the laptop!
a neat little program i liked for use with the macbook is a program called iAlertU its free and activated by the remote!

If you can get to central London get the tube to oxford circus
On regent Street, there is the Apple Store:

You can get the student rate in store
You have to specifically request it - they may ask you to prove it (NUS card/uni id). They didn't ask me - but I do look like a typical student!
Make sure you print off the price before hand, and make absolutely sure they charge you what you expect
By the way , I have been a pc user all my life. I started using apple. Goodbye viruses, crashes, etc. I love it.0 -
Noticed you've not had a definitive answer to this bit yet but I can confirm that the section you can only access from the institutions network is more heavily discounted than the education prices you can access from anywhere.pgb2006 wrote:However, what I wanted to know was about the education area of the apple website. If I'm remember correctly then the set of prices posted below are the more heavily discounted ones.0 -
I just accessed my universities network at home and the institutions prices are identical to the ones in the image above.0
