as katsu said, Lou, you need to arrange a power of attourney so you and/or your oh can deal with her finances and stuff.

Lou - Must be worrying for you - is she living alone? I don't know how these things work but I'd imagine that if you had a chat with her Dr they'd get social services to help out. Good luck at the bank.

Yes she lives alone, she is under a mental health nurse who comes out and assesses her regualrly but he just says its "old age congitive impairment" and unless she developes something like dementia or alzheimers then there is nothing much available.

Its so frustrating too as whenever he comes out to assess her she turns into bloomin marvo the memory mans assistant and does really well in the tests, then cant remember that he has been.

She just thinks that we are all lying to her we have already been accused of taking money from her:(
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.

You need to talk to her about giving you power of attorney. It is a legal document that allows you to act on her behalf. You need to get this arranged whilst she can still agree to it. We had it for my grandmother and it was essential. I've just had a quick google - try this http://www.publicguardian.gov.uk/

Thanks for that kat, I will have a good read of that with OH once we get back. Best get ready.

Lou, i wonder if you need to insist on testing for early onset alzheimers, i think there is medication which can slow it down.

My grandmother was exactly the same. If you believed the "stealing" that we as her family apparently did... What was helpful was when she told people we stole things as well as money - like the can of deodorant my dad apparently stole. At that point I think it was clearer to many people that this was sadly her perception not a reality.

Does she go to church or have a trust relationship with the vicar or someone who you can talk to, who will be more aware of her everyday confusion and therefore could help with the LPA (Lasting Power of Attorney) discussion?

Help the Aged or Age Concern may have good advice.

  • Oh Lou that is so sad. The power of attourney is the way forward I think. Its difficult to know how to play it, unless you can get some sort of diary? to show social Services. Can you write things down for her at all? get one of those really big diaries and keep it in the hall? Ring every day to tell her what day it is?

    Hugs love xxxx
    Nevertheless she persisted.
