Why do I have to give B&Q my postcode just to get an overcharge refunded??

I was in asda a few weeks ago and had 2 lots of shopping to pay for... with both lots I was asked for my postcode, I didnt think to ask why.. I was in a tearing hurry to get to work... Does anyone know why they would be asking for it?

Possibly trying to find out where their customers are from? They may be researching if another store within a certain radius is viable. Or even research to extend their home delivery distances.

HaHaHa. being a tilly monkey myself at B&Q. This comment made me laugh because how the hell would i steal your identity from knowing your address. Also you have just contradicted yourself in that if we are just monkeys.. surely we arent capable to pull off such a stunt to steal YOUR precious identity.
    :T

If you have my name and address and a card scanner under your till then it would be very easy for you to do. Also I have the policy that nobody has my address for personal security reasons, so it's not just some muppet who works on a till who doesn't get it.

I tried to buy a pair of shoes for cash in Brantano a couple of months ago and the little girl on the till asked for my postcode, I declined and she was very upset - acted like I had personally offended her, all I said was 'no, thank you' - she refused to sell me the shoes.......
I frankly couldn't be bothered to take it any further, bought other shoes (cheaper) and will obviously NEVER go back

This reminds me of many years ago when credit cards hadn't been invented.

When paying by cheque I was often asked to put my name and address on the back - I always refused - it was purely the shop trying to gather a mailing list. Invariably it ended up with the manger being summoned - I never lost the argument.
What was surprising was the appalling lack of knowledge about how the cheque guarantee card system worked - many places would ask YOU to write your card number on the back - wrong !
  • I refused to put name and address on back of a cheque in a sports shop. The staff went ballistic. I stood my ground. They said they'd phone the police. I told em go ahead, I'm within my rights. I gave them my cheque guarantee card and that should have been enough.

The manager waded in, started screaming at me. Told him the same. I was thrown out of the shop without the goods. Disgraceful.

It was that chain of cheap sports gear, I forget what it's called, but they have their shops stuffed to the rafters with sports stuff, all a season behind, end of line stock, clearance etc. No wonder it's cheap.

If I remember the name or go past the shop, I'll return here and name them.

Although I can understand that shops need to protect against staff fraud ,I also don't like to give out my personal details. My big bug bear is when I pay for a small item in cash (bought something in Currys for about £20) and they wanted my postcode. I politely said no thankyou and you would have thought I had slapped them by the way they looked at me:eek:

I don't want to be on a mailing list and I don't want my shopping habits tracked by Big Brother. for a small cash purchase there is no legitimate reason to need it

I'd just make one up for them, or better still ask them to make one up for me :)

This is always a good laugh especially with the staff at B&Q here, their database does not have any codes for the Isle of Man so when you give them the code it cannot recognise it, their system even says the store does not exist here and the nearest one is Heysham, the staff her just put the Heysham store post code in for all refunds.
