Do you mean customer areas or do you mean addresses? How exactly would giving your post code enable them to change policies, in relation to fraud, can you give an example?

I don't believe there is a legal requirement to comply with their request. In any event, the integrity of their staff is no concern of yours.

Thier isnt a legal requirment, but, if their returns policy states you must give your postcode then you really should otherwise they dont have to refund you, all postcodes are owned by the Royal Mail so saying i dont want you having MY postcode is irrelivent as you dont own it, and postcodes have been available for a price to businesses for many years, around £4000 a year. plus it helps moniter fraud and help protect the consumer, and also B&Q's profits.

Just to back up those that are saying it's for their purposes and anti-fraud

When I worked at B&Q on a Saturday job many years ago, one of the checkout supervisors was caught diddling the tills by entering fake returns and crediting them to herself. I believe the postcode was one of the ways they caught her.

Sour faced old cow, I was so glad to hear that news.

i work in b&q on the refunds desk our returns policy is changing on the 15th febuary so that anyone who is returning a non-faulty product without a receipt will be refused a refund as for the postcode needing to be given that has only been in force the last couple of months it is to prevent refund fraud when a postcode is given it is entered into the till and then looks up a list of addresses to which the customer is asked to confirm there address if they are unable to do so or the wrong address is given ID may be asked to be shown we can't process any refund through the till doesn't matter if its a cash or card sale a postcode has to be entered before we can get onto the refund screen to process the refund we can't just open the till and give you money out of it as the till would be reading wrong at the end of a working day but in special circumstances like yourself the head office post code can be entered by a supervisor who can then select the head office address to process the refund:)

Thanks for the info - I now know to avoid shopping at B&Q in the future.

Of course they do, if you are entitled to a refund under your statutory rights, or if it is clear you have been overcharged. B&Q's own house rules cannot override their statutory obligations.

"Can I have your postcode sir?" he says.
As is common for such situations, I decline the invitation, as I could see no reason for it and when asked no further explanation could be given except "the system needs it".

The staff are just doing they're job, it isnt they're fault, if anything you should be asking b&q your questions OP

I never get why people speak to maybe someone who's just doing a Saturday job whilst their on till as if they actually own the place and came up with every rule themselves!
