This is not a Robin Hood scenario, charging an exorbitant rate for post and packing isn't just avoiding ebay fees it is defrauding the buyer.

If you want a refund the suggested deal on ebay is that the seller (if a trader) should offer the purchase price back and keep the post and packing element as being an 'expense' and not part of the cost of the item.

SO, if in the case of the MP3 player breaking down and the buyer wanting a refund the seller could easily send out the 1p and consider his side of the bargain kept.

I actually bought an MP3 player from Dabs just before Christmas which was not working when my son tried it on Christmas day. I had to send that back at my own cost and Dabs refunded my account with the purchase price not including the original post and packing that they charged me, which is what they are entitled to do.

Due to the fact the goods were defective, Dabs are responsible for all postage costs, including the return postage to them.
If they were returned under the Distance Sellers Regulations, then Dabs would not be responsible for the return postage, and you would have to pay for that.
Contact Dabs and get your postage costs back (both for them sending, and for you returning the goods).

I have just emailed Dabs again asking for a further refund of £4.98 being the total Post and packing I paid for the item plus the total I paid to send it back to them. I'll let you know what they say this time.

They ignored me last time but I will keep trying.

Here is the scenario that works for us all:-

Seller is in Hong Kong VAT is chargeable on all items over £18. So keep cost of item down and ramp postage.

Thus saving you 17.5% PLUS the £4 Roayal Mail clearance fee.

The seller is in a market where this is what most sellers do so to be competitive he has to have a low end price. Otherwise he would not sell any items from the UK. It is all about perception.

Think you should cut the seller some slack. Other mainly UK items you migh have an argument but why not do what I do and factor all costs into a total. Its really not that hard.

I will however agree if seller does not refund postage and is ramping then this is very wrong.

I have just sold something on E.Bay,and quoted £12 for P&P,which is actually not what it will cost,it may cost about £7.But,in my ads,I always state that P&P will be £xx,and if it's more I'll pay it,and if it's less I'll refund the cost.

I always do this, because in my opinion, the purchaser should pay the full cost of postage, much in the same way you do if you buy something off a retailer, and have it delivered.

However.I ONLY charge for the actual postage, never packing, because, like most of us,I can get a free box from anywhere, like a supermarket etc,and put the goods in that, and to date I have NEVER had a bad feedback because of it.

I feel my way is fair, and agree that sellers who charge fees way above the cost of the goods, are making money out of people that way,and should be stopped.
That's my mutt in the picture above.
  • the other reason its a bit annoying is when you list by price and it comes up super-cheap with all these "bargains" at the top when that's not really the case ::)

i believe one of the future changes ebay are lookng at making is the displaying of postal costs on the list when you do a search, so that buyers know the total cost before drilling down into the items
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

you can already display postage cost on the list by clicking on "customise display" next to the "sort by" drop down list....but you can't order by total cost (ie. current bid/price + p&p :P)....however i have the p&p cost showing next to the current bid price when i search and it might be useful for others too :)

I am fed up with people moaning about this sort of thing as long as all the costs are stated in the auction deal with it and factor it into your bid price!

High postage and packaging only becomes a problem if they are not stated upfront in the auction and added by the seller after the auction has finished.
compound interest makes life taste better!
