WARNING: don't buy an iPod from the Apple shop

  • I got a replacement iPod this way, I don't see the issue the OP had.

For most stuff that breaks, you've got to return it or post it off, wait for a replacement or for it to be fixed.

    Apple do this:

    1. It breaks
    2. Contact them via the web, and they send you a new one.
    3. Included is an envelope which is postage paid.
    4. Pop the old one in it, call the courier and they pick it up

OK, perhaps an issue you're not at home for them to collect it, but they've got massive security issues if they start picking it up from different places.

I see this as a good returns service, slightly hampered by an inflexible return envelope system.

Having bought three ipods for my three boys direct from the Apple website I would never ever buy another Apple product. One was faulty on arrival and went back immediately and I was refunded about a month later. The second broke down after about 10 days and I had to wait in all day for the UPS man to come and collect it and then another day when it came back.

The replacement for the second one also broke down within a month and was replaced (2 days waiting in for the UPS man). The third one lasted 5 months and went back and was repaired (2 days waiting for UPS man). We bought a replacement from Curry's for one of the refunded units and when that broke down I was almost in tears as I couldn't face all the palaver. However Currys were wonderful and said there was no problem in getting my money back, they wouldn't even check the unit as they sent so many back they just assume they don't last. They then suggested I bought a Zen instead, which I did and that is still going.

Never ever again, anything designed to fail within a matter of months is just not for me.

Unfortunately you won't get a better service from John Lewis. I bought an iPod from there because of their (usually) excellent service. Took it back when it went faulty after two months, and they told me I had to ring Apple, who gave the same information as below. Seems that John Lewis are not allowed to take back and replace Apple products, they have to be sent back to Apple by the customer.

My solution ... buy a Sony one ... no problems at all and at least twice the battery life.
    Gone ... or have I?

The problem with Apple in the UK is that they do not have a servicing here, they are based in Ireland and other places in Europe.

IMy son's Ipod broke down last week ( bought on july 2005 so still in warranty) & I phoned the Apple helpline who gave me the option of returning it to them via UPS or I could take it to one of their recognised repairers in my area. I took it in on Mon & it will take 2/3 weeks to fix.

What happened to the Sale fo Goods Act in all this? The contract is between the seller and the buyer not the manufacturer, so get stuck into John Lewis.
Boufje, I would be making formal complaints via Trading Standards/Consumer Direct.

I too agree with the OP, simply I have never, and nor will I ever buy an Apply product. And every time I read stuff like this I know I am right. You hear it too often.

Quoting the sales of goods act is all very well. But it simply should not be this hard, nor get to the sales of goods act stage. And how much is this all going to cost in terms of lost wages and stress in the end? And I bet Apply rely on this to inhibit returns.

In some cases rather than loose a days wage it would be cheaper to thrown the piece of rubbish away and start again.

I know...I was surprised myself. I had got all worked up about it, I had gone ready for a fight, or at least a 'it has to go to Apple', and they told me it wasn't a reliable product and they would change it for something different.

I almost fell over with shock!

you can drop it off at your local ups depot....same thing happened to me a year ago. i moved house during the 10 day window. they were open til 7 and not too much of an inconvenience. i dont see what the problem is. if you go along with it, the system works fantastically well.
