DVD Rom drive on laptop playing up please help

CD and DVd writers use 2 lasers ...one to read, and a more powerful one to burn data onto the disc. Your problem would suggest that the "Write" laser is working fine , so you can burn data onto a disc (and others can read it) but your "Read" laser isn't.

I totally agree with you, it sounds like a new drive is needed, but why will it read shop bought programs/games and not ones I've burnt myself? I hate laptops!!!!!0 -
Burned disks are different from commercial ones - I'd guess that it is a lot easier to read the difference between a nice shiny material and the pits in it than it is to read the differences in the dye layer you get in writeable media
On reflection it may even be that a different laser is used - something for me to research later if I remember0
