Buying a new telly

Options
For the first time in my life I'm going to be in the position to buy myself a new telly in April and have absolutely no idea what the procedure is with regards to the retailer and the TV licence people.

For obvious reeasons, even though I know it's a bit naughty, I don't want the TV Licence people to have my details as I can't afford the TV Licence and only watch the BBC once a week for Match of The Day lol, and I'm planning on paying in cash as a result of this. Will the retailer want to see some sort of ID or can I just give a made up name and address and not worry about it?

And I just thought I'd point you in the direction of Richer Sounds as that's where I'm getting my telly from. They have excellent deals in there but unfortunately don't have too many shops in the country. Worth checking out if you want a new telly or hifi.

You should have a license to watch any TV channel as it's being broadcast, not just the BBC. Besides, even watching the TV once a week means you should have a license.

Retailer will not ask for ID.

You will be required to give a name and address when you make your purchase and the retailer may well ask for some form of ID. I was about 3 months ago and all I bought was a cheapo Freeview box. Whether you supply the correct details is a matter between you and your God but bear in mind that if someone comes a knocking....

BTW - openly stating that you are going to commit an offence on a public forum is definitely not a good idea. Someone from Bristol might just be contacting the admin for your registration details and any IP addresses tomorrow.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

I hope you can afford a £1k+ fine if you get caught.

I doubt it would be worth their bother when there are FAR easier fish to catch. Most people who end up convicted of TV licence evasion make the mistake of either allowing a TV licence inspector into their home, or "confess" to their crime when the TVL inspector calls.

a heard a while ago that TV licenses will become a thing of the past soon .

Basically the fee will be automatically added to your council tax . let's be honest how may people don't have a TV these days . even the ones that don't probably listen to BBC radio or use the BBC site on the net .

i doubt there will be enough of a uproar to stop it . ( though no doubt The Daily Mail will start thumping it's fists )

no TV detector vans will save around £80 million a year .Mr Cameron is not going to pass on a saving like is he ?
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

So i don't need to buy a TV license any more so long as I dont admit it, and don't let anyone in?

That is basically the case. Ever driven at 71mph on a motorway? If you have then you are just as much as criminal as someone who watches TV without a licence, yet how many people have driven at 71mph or over and not been convicted of this criminal offence?

I don't own a TV and have no intention of ever owning one. I do use the BBC website but this has never required a licence to use. If it did then the BBC would probably lock it down with a password linked to the TV licence so only licence holders could use it.
  • pop into your local Court and check the notice board for the days hearings. Most are TV licence evasion.

Why bother buying a TV? Nick one instead.

Think of other laws you can "bypass" while you are at it.
